Description

W. H. HART.
Lounges.
No, 143,283, PatentedSeptember30,l8173.
WITAESES. NvENToR fm www@ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. HART, OF LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO AI COLBU'RN, OF NASHUA, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
IMPROVEMENT IN LOUNGES.
-Speciication forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,283, dated September 30, 1873; application filed May 26, 1873.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. HART, of Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and Gom- `monwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Lounges, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to a lounge having an adjustable head, which may be inclined at various angles to the body oi' the lounge, and which may also be removed from said lounge and another substituted in its place.
The accompanying drawings represent my invention. n
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my lounge. Fig. 2 shows a form of head which may be substituted for that represented in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents the device for securing the head of the lounge to the body of the same, and for adjusting the parts to each other.
A is the head of the lounge. B is the body of the lounge. To the bodyB `are attached two slightly-elastic plates, I I, one on the front and the other on the rear of the body of the lounge, which plates project beyond the end of the lounge, and have, on the inner faces of said projecting parts, radially-grooved disks. To the head A or E of the lounge are attached two disks, F F, one on each side of said head, having on their outer faces radial grooves (or, rather, ridges and grooves) which correspond to those in the plates I I. Through holes in the centers of the disks F F, through the head A, and through the centers of the disks on the plates I I, passes a rod, L, which has, at one end, an enlarged head, K, and at the other end a screw, M, on which turns the thumb-nut H. When the thumbnut H is loosened the head A may be swung up or down on the rod L to any position from a horizontal to a perpendicular one, and by tightening said thumbnut the ridges on the iieXible plates I I will enter the grooves on the disks F F, and vice versa, and retain the head A in the desired position. By removing the thumb-nut en tirely andv withdrawing the rod L4 the head A may readily be removed, and another form of head, E, may readily be substituted in its place. C is the back of the lounge.
The plates I I may be jointed near the ends.
The advantages of my invention are that the head of the lounge may readily be rcmoved, and that the head may also be adjusted for the use of invalids and others, forming both a lounge and a chair.
I claim as my invention- The combination of the rod L, the thumbnut H, the plates I I on the body of the lounge, and the disks F F on the head A, as and for the purpose herein specified.
WILLIAM H. HART.
