This invention relates to a core box mould for the moulding of cores from green sand of irregular shape, though not necessarily limited to any prescribed shape. The core be); is particularly adapted for the moulding ofcores for pistons of engines such as are used in internal combustion engines, and with the same the cores may be moulded, severalat one time in the core boxof my invention and withdrawn therefrom and I 1 usecltoserve as thedrag portion of a complete d moulchwith which a properly moulded cope 1s; tobe usedto complete the mould. The. invention, primarily, is directed to a relatively simple construction of box in which green sand cores may be formed and character,
moulded, and the same quickly withdrawn therefrom, so that production on a large scale may be had. A. further object of the invention is to construct acore box of this in which different sizes and shapes ofpiston cores may be made by merely changing certain parts ofthe b0}; to correspond with the piston core desired, the master box being constructed to detachab'ly receive the special fittings tor the dif} ferent t ues and sizes oi 'cores this rendering it possible to provide cores for many diiierent sizes and types ofpistons without having a complete core box for each size or type. In the construction of the core box, an outer housing or casing of metal is provided, rectangular in cross section its upper portion and having parallel sides 1 and upper edges of said housing, and is connected thereto by screws 1. This plate has four openings 5 therethrough as shown.
A base plate 6 of circular out-line is located in the lower portion of the housing or casing and is provided with a down wardly extending annular flange 6 which fits within the lower circular portion of the casing. At four points, directly under each opening 5 in the upper plate 3, depressions 7 are made in base plate 6 in which head members 8 are seated, being detacliably connected and secured in the de pressions by screws as shown in Fig. 2. The head members 8 are provided with ribs 3 on their upper sides, but this is not any feature of the invention, said head members being variously formed in accordance with the shape of cores wanted for the pistons. An annular rib 9 is cast integralwith base plate 6 around each depression 7, the purpose of which will later appear.
1n the outer sidesof the flange 6 of the base plate, a plurality of inclined grooves or slots 10 are out, four being shown, though this may be varied. A ring 11 is mounted in the lower part of the housing around the'fiange 6, lying under an inwardly projecting rib 12 of the casing, and held thereagainst by a securing ring 13 which is attached at the lower edges of the lower circular portion of the housing by screws-14c. I Rollers 15 project inwardly from the ring 1 into the cam grooves 10. A11 outwardly projecting operating handle 16 is connected to the ring 11, passing through an elongated slot 17 made in the lower circular portion of the housing, and which is indicated at 18.
It is obvious that by moving the handle 16 back and forth in the slot 17, ring ll may be turned, this serving to raise and lower base plate 6, due to the formation of the cam grooves 10 and the rollers 15 running therein. Two inwardly extending lugs 19 project toward each other from opposite sides of the housing to which depending guide pins 20 are secured, the same passing downwardly through openings 21 formed in inwardly projecting lugs 19 on the flange 6 of the base plate. The pins serve to guide the base plate in its movements and make such movements uniform, obviating binding and the like.
A screw shaft 22 is mounted on the casing,
extending between and through ends .2 thereof. At its intermediate portion each side of the middle thereof, said shaft is equipped with two oppositely threaded screws 23 and 24 and adjacent its ends with ed journal boxes having upper and lower parts 26 connected to the ends 2 of the outer housing, whereby'the screw shaft and parts attached theretdmay be readily placed in or taken from the housing by merely removing the upper. halves 2601f said ournals. The shaft at one end. has a handle 27 for manual operation and at the other end a collar 28 whereby endwise movement of the shaft is prevented.
An eirteriorly threaded sleeve 29 is threaded on to each of the screws 23 and 2 1 and a similar sleeveformed of upper and lower halves 30 is located around each of the screws 23 and 24. On each of the'sleeves thus constructedone half of a master boX member is mounted. There are four of these members indicated at 31, a threaded opening 32 being made centrally through each for the reception of the sleeve 29 or 30. At each end, each member 32 is formed with a semicylindrical recess, the walls to which are indicated at 33, and at the lower ends and on the outer sides of said walls, the same are out or otherwise formedwith a downwardly extending inward taper, as shown at 34, conforming to the shape on the inner sides of the annular ribs 9 heretofore described. Each member 31 at its upper side is provided with a flange 35 rectan ular in outline and adapted to be positioned imme diately under theupper plate 3 of the outer housing, the edges of said flange being disposed between said plate 3 and under guide ribs 35" projecting inwardly from sides 1 of the housing, as shown in Fig. 5.
The inner sleeves are divided longitudinally for purposes of assembling the parts which otherwise could not be. accomplished unless the shaft 22-was divided at its middle. The halves of sleeves30'are placed in proper position on their screws 23 and 24, and the two inner halves 31 of the master boxes threaded to position thereon against the lock nuts 30. The outer halves 31 are then threaded on to their sleeves 29 and the sleeves in turn threaded on to their screws 23 and 2&1, after which the bearings 25, handle 27 and collar 28 are attached, the whole assembly being then placed in the outer housing on the lower halves 26 of the. journals, the upper halvesl being then secured in place.
' In practice, before placing the assembly within the outer housing, the particular core form which is to be used, may be placed within the cylindrical parts 33 of the master boxes These may be of various forms. As shown, two halves 36 of a piston core form are placed in opposite master box-forms 33 and secured thereto by screws 36, which. are readily removable to permit changes of core forms. The forms are for piston cores having inwardly projecting lugs 37 extending toward each other; and-adjacent their lower en dsand on their inner sides, the core forms 36am provided with grooves 38 into'which the edges of ribs 8 of the heat s 8 are adapt ed to seat when the boxes are closed.

The elevation of the base plate draws the ribs 8 from the core 41 in each of the four cores formed, and the separation of the master box halves carries the core forms .36 with them, drawingthe lugs'3'7 from the cores leavingv the cavities 42 in the sides thereof, the same as the drawing of the ribs 8 left the slots 43 in the core. This movement of the master box halves away from each other, leaves the cores free for drawing from the core box, which may be done by unclamping strike plate 40 and lowering it from the core box in any suitable manner. The openings 5 in the plate 3 are large enough to freely passthe cores formed, and the sand whichhas filled such openings makes a base 44 for the cores where the same rest on the i plate 40. The partsof the core box may be returned to closed position, then the entire box turned back to originalposition and the operation repeated, the process being indefinitely repeated until a desired number ofgreen sand cores are obtained. This construction of core box is particularly useful and practical for the quantity production of cores for pistons,'but is not limited to use for the production of the one type of core. The cores formed may comprise the drag of the complete mould, a proper cope being placed thereover; The rapidity of operation of the box is a valuable feature, it beingevident that quantity production is dependent upon quick acting mechanisms in moulding well as in other arts. The: use of the same constructlon ofbox fondifierent types of work or difierent sizes thereof, merely requiring the changing of the immediate core forms in theniaster boxes is a further valuable feature of the invention. The construction is strong and durable, fully capable of withstanding the heavy duty'to which it is subjected in service, it being particularly safeguarded against separation of the core forms under pressure such as is induced by packing or compressing thesand therein to the necessary density. Many changes in detail of construction may be resorted to with out departing from the invention which is defined in the appended claims, and 1 con sioer myself entitled to all such constructions as come within the' scope of the claims. 2 I claim: f
1. A device of the character described, comprising an outer casing, a plate having an opening therethrough covering the upper side of the casing, a base plate movably mounted at the lower side of the casing, means to raise and lower said base plate, a divided master box located between the plates and consisting of two halves, means for simultaneously moving said halves of the master box toward or away from each other, a two part core form detachably connected with the master box, one part of the form on each of the halves of the box, and a core head member, detachably connected to the base plate directly below the opening in the upper plate, said master boxwhen in closed position coming undersaid opening in the upper plate, substantially as and for the purposes described. A device of the character described, comprising an outer housing, a plate ing a plurality of openings therethrough covering the upper side of the housing, a. base plate movably mounted ill the lower side of the housing, means to and lower the base plate with respect to the housing, a plurality of master boxes located within the housing, each consisting of two halves, a single means for simultaneously moving the halves of all the master boxes toward or away from each other, and core forms detachably connected to the halves of the masterbox and the base plate adapted to come together and form complete core mould when the halves of the master box are moved together and being located one under each opening in the upper plate, substantially as described. I
3. A device of the characterdescribed, comprising an outer housing, a plate having openings therethii'oug'h covering the upper side of the housing, two part core side forms mounted one under each opening in the plate, means for moving the parts of the core forms toward or away from each other, a base plate movably mounted in the lower port-ion of the housing, means for moving the same toward or away from the lower ends of the core side forms, and core head forms attached to the base plate, one for each'two part core side forms and iassociating therewith to complete the core form when moved into conjunction therewith, one of said completecore forms being positioned under each opening in the upper plate.
t; In combination, an outer housing having parallel sides and ends at its upper portion and oi: cylindrical form at its lower portion, a base plate having an annular downwardly extending flange located within the lower portion of the housing, said flange having cam slots cut therein, a ring mounted within said lower portion of the housing around the flange, means projecting from the ring into said cam slots whereby on= rotation of the rin the base ilate is raised b or lowered, means for manually turning said ring, divided master boxes in the housing, a single means for moving the parts of each master box simultaneously toward or away from each other, and a plate covering the upper side of the housing provided with openings therethrough under which the master boxes come when in closed position, substantially as described.
5. In combination, the elements in combination defined in claim a, combined with guide pins attached to and depending from the inner sides of the housing, said base plate having guide openings into which said pins extenchsubstantially as described.
6, In combination, an outcrhousing, a plate having openings therein through which sand may be entered into the housing, a divided core mould within the housing havingsides and a lower head into which the'sand is pressed, means for moving the sides away from each other or toward each other, and means for moving the head toward or away from the lower ends oi? said sides, whereby the core mould may be separated to permit removal of the core formed, or the parts brought together for the operative completion of the mould, substantially as described.
7. In combination, an outer housing, a cover plate at its 'upperside having openings therethrougi, a base plate located in and closing the lower end of the housing, means for raising or lowering the base plate, a screw shaft rotatably mounted in and passin through the housing and provided with a pair of oppositely threaded screws, master box members mounted on the shaft, one on each screw, and means for manually turning the screw to bring the said members together or move the same away from each other, said members when brought to gether having sand receiving openings located directly under the openings in said cover plate, substantially as described.
8. The elements in combination defined in claim 7, combined with an upwardly projecting flange on the base plate adapted to pass around the lower edges of the master box members when the same are brought together and the base plate moved toward the same, substantially as described.
9. The elements in combination defined in claim 7, combined with core. side forms cover plate at its upper side having open-- ings ,therethrough', abase plate located in and closing the lower side otthe housing,
means for raising or lowering the base plate with respect to the housing, a screw shaft rotatably mounted in and passing through the housing and formed "in its lengthwith a plurality of pairs of oppositely threaded screws, master box members mounted in pairs on the pairs of oppositely threaded screws, a handle at one end of the shaft for manually turning the same to move the master box members toward or away from each other, said master box members when brought together'enclosing openings coming directly under the openings in the cover plate.

In combination, a housing having an upper rectangular portion and a lower cylindrical portion, a base plate of circular form located in the lower part ofthe housing and provided with a downwardly extending annular flange in which a plurality of inclined cam grooves are cut, a ring around said flange and located betweenthe same and the walls of the housing, a plurality of rollers rotatably' mounted on and projecting from the ring into said cam slot-s, a handle attached to the ring and extending outwardly therefrom, said-housing having a slottherein for the passage of the handle, a cover plate to the upper side of the housing having sand entrance openings therein, master box members mounted inpairs in the upper portion of the housing, means for moving the members of a pair of master box members toward or away from each other, and means on the upper side of the base plate forengaging with the master box members at their lower edges when the same are in closed position to. hold the same from separation from pressure of sand, substantially as described.
12. In combinatiomapiston core forming mechanism, comprising separable side members, means for mounting the same to bring them together or separate them a distance from each other, an end closing member movable toward or away from'one end of the side member s and means onsaid end closing member engaging with the side as described.
13. In combination, two separable side members, means for movably mounting the same to simultaneously move them toward or away from each other, said members when brought together in closed position having an opening between them-shaped in accordance with a mould core desired, means for manually operating said first means, an end closing member movably mounted adjacent one end of the side members and operable toward or away from said end of said let. A machine for forming green sand cores comprising separable sides and an end core form, manually operable means for moving the sides toward or away from each other'and the end form toward or away from one end of the sides, and means on said end closing member engaging with the side members to hold them in locked position, substantially as described.
15. A machine for forming green sand cores comprising two separable side members, means for moving the same toward or away from each other, and end member movably mounted to close the side members at one end or move away therefrom, a means for moving said end member and means on said end closing member engaging with the side members to hold them in locked position, substantially as described.
