` Statelof` New York, have invented certain y that, in addition to its other functions, it

comprises a convenient carrier for a holder' `in which the safety razor blade may be easily mounted for honing and stropping. Other objects of the invention will appear from the description hereinafter and the features of novelty will be pointedout in the appended claims. l p

In `the accompanying drawings, which illustrate an example of my invention without defining its limits, Fig. 1 isa face view of the device showing the hone; Figi 2 is a similar view showing the strop; Fig. 8 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the strop `folded back to expose the interior of the device; Fig. i4 is a longitudinal section on y the line 4 4 of Fig. 1 with the strop folded `back upon the hone and Fig. `5 is a crosssection on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.

In its illustrated form the device com prises a frameconsisting of two parallel and spaced side lmembers 10 permanently connected in fixed relationin any suitable manner by means of cross-bars 11 and pref erably continued at one end in the form of an integral handle 12. The cross-bars 11 are provided with lugs 13 upon which a plate 14 vof metal or other suitable material is fixed, said plate extending lengthwise of the device and having a transverse width slightly less than the distance between the two side members 10; in the preferred con struction the longitudinal edges of the plate 14 are bent inwardly in the form of flanges 15 to avoid exposed edges whereby the razor blades might be injured during the sharpening process and to increase the rigidity of said plate. The plate 14 carries a hone 16 which is permanently secured thereon inany convenient manner and which may be cone structed in any desired way; ,in the preferred arrangement the hone 16 comprises a strip of leather or other material dressed `with a suitable compound to impart the desired sharpening qualities thereto.

either permanently or detachably as de sired, to a lug 18 projectingoutwardly from the cross-bar 11; the other `end of said strop 1T is provided with an eyelet or the like 20 adapted for detachable connection with a projection 21 extending outwardly from the other cross-bar 11. In its normal position the strop 17` extends lengthwise ofthe device ov'er flanges 22 projecting perpendicu larly from the crossebars 11, the parts being so proportioned and located with respect to each other that the strop 17 willbe stretched under` somewhat of a tension when the eyelet 2O isy connected with Ithe projection 21.

In the `normal condition of the device Vthe parts occupy the positions indicatedfin Figsjl and 2 in which the combined plate and hone 14e, 16 constitute the one face of the device and the strop 17 the other face thereof andcomprise closures for the space defined by the side members 10 and the cross-bars Yllgthe fact that the strop 17 `is movably connected with the device renders this space readily accessible; For the purpose of utilizing this space and to include inthe device an element essential tri-the proper co--operation of razor blades of the safety razor typewith the hone and strop, means are provided for removably supporting a blade-holder in said space,` lin the `illustrated example this means comprises a rigid stud 23 on the one crossbar 11 and a somewhat longer stud 24 on the other crossbar 11, said studs projecting toward each other, in axial alinement as shown in Figs. 3 and 4; a coil spring 25 is mounted upon the stud 24: and is secured against removal therefrom in any convenient manner. The blade-holder, in the illustrated example, comprises a handle 26 and a stem 27 suitably slotted to receive the blades and including positioning collars 28 and a locking washer 29 for positioning and locking the blade in place upon said holder. rlhe handle 26 is pro-vided with a socket 30 for the accommodation of the stud 23 while the stem 27 is ict `for sharpening ordinary formed with an end recess 31 or the entire stem may be hollow for the reception of the stud 24; with the described arrangement the holder is supported upon the studs 23 and 24. and is held thereon by the pressure of the spring 25 against the outer end ofthe stem 27. The holder` may be readily removed for use by simply forcing the stem 2T lengthwise of the stud 24 against the tension of the spring 25 a sufficient distance to release the handle socket 30 from the stud 23 and then withdrawing the stem from the stud 24.

For the purpose of describing the 'operation of the device it will be assumed that it is being used for sharpening a safety razor blade, it being understood that this is not to be taken in any sense as dening the limits of the invention and further that the device may be utilized with equal efficiency razor blades.

In practice the device is held by the handle 12 in kone hand with the opposite end of said device preferably resting upon a table or other suitable support; the holder with the yblade in position thereon, is held in the other hand with the thumb and index finger resting'partly upon the blade itself in order t0 impart a pressure thereto. The cutting edge of the blade backward and forward first over the hone 16 and then over the strop 17 eight or ten times, the handle 26 being suitably manipulated to bring the opposite sides or faces of the blade edge alternately into contact with the hone and strop respectively. The stropping of the blade may be done with the strop in its normal position shown in Fin:

L1 or if a more rigid resistance is desired the one end of the strop may be detached from the projection 21 and the strop swung around and laid lengthwise 'of and upon the hone 16 which thus constitutes a rigid backing for said strop during the stropping operation.

The device provides a combined and universal hone and strop whereby razor blades and particularly safety razor blades may be easily maintained in an efiicient condition to render maximum service and whereby the cutting edge may be indefinitely renewed.

is then passed' The device is compact and in addition to its other functions combines the elements in a| unitary structure in which they are at all times available l'or use; the device may be readily carried about and is thus capable of being used while tavclling. lith the invention it is thus possible to provide the user at all times with blades whereby smooth, easy and efficient shaving is always insured.

Various changes in the specific lorm shown and described may be made within the sco'pe of the claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.

I claim:

1. A combined honing and stropping levice comprising a frame consisting of spaced, parallel side members, cross-bars connecting the same and a handle forming an integral 'continuaton of said side members, a rigid ho'ne on said frame, a strop pivotally connected to one of said cross-bars, teo-operating means on said strop and the other crossebar whereby the free end of said strop is detacliably conl'i'ected with said cross-bar to stretch said strop in parallel spaced relation to said hone and means on said cross-bars` within the space between said hone and strop for supporting a blade holder in said space.

A combined honing and stropping device comprising a frame consisting of spaced, parallel side menibers, cross-bars connecting the same and a handle formingr an integral construction ol said side nicmbers, a rigid hone on said frame, a strop pivotally connected to one of said cross-balsv` tto-operating 'means on said strop and the other cross-bar whereby the free end of said strop is detachably connected with said cross-bar to stretch said strop in parallel.r spaced relation to said hone. a pair of studs projecting toward each other from said cross-bars in axial alinement in the space between said hone and strop for detachablr supporting a blade holder in said spare and a spring on one of said studs whereby said holder is yieldingly maintained in position on said studs.
