Application fi led January 10, 1921. Serial No. 436,387.
Tocll whom it may concern:
State of Massachusetts, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chil drens Harness, of which the following is a This invention relates to improvementsin harness for restraining children irom assuming standing or upright positions in beds or cribs and consists in means for attaching an outer garment of a child to a bed or crib so as topermit of a free turning action of the child in the crib or bed and to restrain it from assuming an upright position. v i
With the above and other objects in view this invention relates to certain new and useful constructions, combinations and an described in the fully illustrated Fig. l is a perspectiveview showing the device applied to a crib.
Fig. 2 is a detail view, partly in section, showing a book of a modified form.
Referring to the accompanying drawings 5, designates a crib which supports the mattress 6 on which the child A is supported.
Thechild is provided with a' nightgown or outer garment 7 to the front wall oi which the loop 8 is connected and to the back wall ofwhich the loop 9 is connected. A restraining cord or strap or the like 10 is connected with one corner of the crib and a similar strap or cord 11 is connected with the op posite corner of the crib. The straps l0 and 11 are each provided with a connecting device which is shown to be inthe form oi a loop 12 which can be opened and closed by means of a snap button 13 and which is adapted to embrace one oit'the corner posts of the crib as will be readily understood. The straps 10 and 11 are connected with each other at 14: and are extended therefrom to provide connecting straps 15 and 16 which are adapted to be extended through the loops 8 and 9 and then connected to each other. In place of the snap button 13 and the loop 12 I may employ a hook 17 having an eye 17 whereby it may be detachably connected with either of the straps 10 and 11.
A strap 20 is extended across the breast of the child, one endof which is connected to one side of the mattress or crib and the other end of which is connected to the opposite side of the mattress or crib. This strap is the full equivalent for this purpose of the usual upper sheet, when the same is properly pinned in position as a covering for the child. The foot straps prevent the child from shifting longitudinally out of the bed covering while the transverse strap or bed covering restrain the child against moving to upright position.
The harness permitsof a child to roll in the bedor crib it'reely and does not bind the child or cause chafing and should the child attempt to assume an upright or standing position he or she will be attectively prevented by the actionot the restraining device upon the nightgown or garment worn.
The device can be readily attached to any nightgown; and permits of the proper positioning oftlie bed clothes over the child so that the child can be protected and prevented from displacing the bed clothes from protecting position. 1 My invention has been successfully tried out with a large number of children and has been a source of great comfort and security. Having described my invention, I claim: A childs harness consisting of a combination with a night gown adapted to reach to the feet of the infant wearer, two diverging straps adapted to be detachably connected with the strap on one end of a crib orthe like and flexible retaining straps connected to the front and back walls of the night gown, between the feet of the wearer and at a point near said feet and connected to the detachable straps, to maintain the infant in a position in the bed and to restrain him against movement lengthwise in the bed away from said end legs, means being provided for restraining the infant in a reclining position in the bed consisting of a flexible member traversing the infant and secured to thesides or the bed or crib.
Signed by me at Holyoke, Massachusetts. i MARY CONNUR.
