The invention refers to baby-garments, in particular baby-nightshirts, and its subject is a new and improved baby-garment or nightshirt with a safety device to prevent the baby from being hurt or falling out of the cot in consequence of turning or tossing-movements within the cot, or of standing up within the cot.

There are already known certain devices intended to prevent such accidents, which devices consist belts fastened around the trunk of the babys body in the height of the breast or at the hips, the end of which belts are to be fastened within the frame of the cot, or within the baby carriage in such manner, that the baby is prevented from leaning over the sidewall of the cot or carriage and to fall out of it. These devices have however several disadvantages, in particular they are injurious to the health of the baby for the following reasons: If for instance the baby during sleep tosses about or makes a turning movement, then these parts of the shirt or of the body which are fixed by the belt or ribbon cannot join in such turning movements, and the result of this will be pressure on the body and a chafing of the skin. When the baby will wake up, the sensation of pain increases its restlessness, which soon causes more injuries if the nurse does not promptly take care of the baby.

The object of the present invention is to overcome these drawbacks of the known devices and to provide a new and improved baby-garment or nightshirt with a safety device for the said purposes. My new and improved construction, whilst giving to the baby the same safety, eliminates completely the danger of hurts and other injuries to the body, as my improved nightshirt or garment with the safety device gives to the body complete freedom for all kind of movements of the body, and it allows likewise the baby to stand up within the cot or carriage, but prevents it nevertheless from leaning out over the sidewall of the cot or carriage so far, that it could fall out of it. In order to obtain these objects of the invention, I devised a new and improved construction for the baby-garment or nightshirt with a safety device, the first and main feature of which construction consists therein, that the safety device is fastened to the feet-end of the garment or night-shirt, so that every part of the body is given absolute freedom for turning or for other movements in all directions, within the cot or carriage, and nevertheless the baby is prevented from leaning too far over the side of the cot or carriage. Another important feature of my new and improved construction consists therein that this particular way of fastening the safety device to the feet-end of the garment or nightshirt enhances the freedom for movements of the babys body by the fact, that the points of fastening the safety device to the shirt or garment can, to a certain amount, follow the shifting movements of the shirt or garment itself, when the baby is tossing about within the cot. Furthermore it is an important feature of the invention, that the fastening of the safety device to the shirt is such, that the fastening means can never exert any pressure on the babys body, nor can they chafe the skin, no matter how much the baby is tossing or moving about within the cot or carriage.

In order that the invention may be understood completely, I have shown in the drawing some construction. view of a babys nightshirt or garment with a first embodiment of my new and improved safety device. Fig. 2 is a representation, in an enlarged scale, of the feet-end of the night-shirt or garment with the adjoining parts of the safety device.

Fig. 3 is a slight modification of the subject of the invention.

Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the nightshirt or garment (without the baby in it), fastened on the frame of a bed, by means of my new and improved safety device.

Referring now more in particular to the drawing, a baby-nightshirt or garment I I of any desired design is shown, with which the baby shall be clothed, before putting it to sleep, or placing it into a baby carriage. A rather broad lashing I2 is fastened to the foot-end of the garment or nightshirt. A belt or ribbon I3 is fastened to the garment or nightshirt at I4 and passed loosely through the lashing to the other side of the shirt or garment, and its free end at this other side is provided with suitable means, for instance a buckle l5 and holes, allowing to fasten this end at some suitable part of the babys cot or car- Another belt or ribbon I6 is fastened at the right-side-end of the lashing to the shirt or garment at i i, is then passed loosely through the lashing I2 and provided at the other side likewise with a buckle IS and holes, for fastening this end to the left side of the cot or carriage. In a simplified construction the buckles l5 and I8 and the holes may be omitted and the end of the belt or ribbon l3 or l6 respectively may be simply tied to the cot or carriage. The before described construction gives to the baby, which has been clothed with the nightshirt or garment, complete freedom to move any part of its body, and there clearly how the two ribbons or or buckled to suitable parts of the is no danger or possibility that the fastening means could cause any injury or hurt to the baby. The belt or ribbon fastened to the nightshirt or garment in said manner, will follow the movements of the baby, because the lashing on the shirt or garment is free to slip along on the two belts or ribbons. Furthermore the baby may even stand up within the shirt or garment without being hampered by the safety device, but nevertheless the limited lateral freedom for movement of the safety device will prevent the baby from coming too near to the sidewall of the cot or carriage and to lean over it, so far, that it could fall out.

The enlarged perspective view of Fig. 2, shows belts are fastened with their ends I! and M respectively to the garment or nightshirt, how they are passed through the lashing at the brim of the garment, and how a fastening buckle or other fastening means may be provided at the free ends of the belts or ribbons.

The modification of the invention, shown in the Fig. 3 consists therein, that at the feet-end of the garment or nightshirt IQ for a part of its periphery a hemstitch 20 is provided, through which hemstitch a belt or ribbon 2| may be slipped, so as to be freely slidable within it, the two ends of which belt or ribbon may be tied babys cot or carriage. The drawing shows clearly, that the hemstitch with the fastening belt or ribbon in it may be drawn into folds, in order to close the foot-end of the garment or shirt more or less.

The belt or garment may be arranged either freely slidable within the hemstitch, or it may be fixed to it at some parts temporarily by a safety pin or permanently by the means of a crossseam.

The illustration, shown in Fig. 4 is more or less self-explanatory: It shows the nightshirt or garment l9 (within which the baby must be supposed to be) lying on the bed 22, and the hemstitch 20 at the foot-end of the garment is gently pressed down on the bed by means of the belt or ribbon 2|, the end of which, after being looped round the longitudinal bar 23 of a bed, is fixed thereto by means of the buckle 24.

It is to be understood, that the invention is not restricted to the before described and illustrated embodiments. First of all it is evident, that within the whole specification and in the claims the expressions baby-garment and night-shirt are to be considered as interchangeable or more or less identical; the same thing applies to the expressions cot, bed or baby-carriage. The belt or ribbon may be made detachable from the garment or nightshirt, and it may be fastened to the latter likewise cross-wise to the foot-end of the garment or night-shirt and then fastened with its free end to some place in the middle longitudinal zone of the mattress or beddings.

I claim:

1. A safety device for holding a baby in bed, comprising a baby garment adapted to surround the body of the baby, in combination with means of the ribbon type, said means being fastened to the garment in its middle zone near to the lower or foot-end of the garment and extending from the place of fastening loosely to both sides to be fixed to some middle parts of the two sides of the bed.

2. A safety device for holding a baby in bed, comprising a baby garment adapted to surround the body of the baby, in combination with two ribbons, which are fastened with their one ends at two different points in the middle zone of the front part of the garment near to its lower or foot-end, and which two ribbons are crossing each other in the said middle zone of the garment and extend in opposite directions loosely over the garment and over the bed, to be fixed with their other ends to some middle parts of the side of the bed.

3. A safety device for holding a baby in bed, comprising a baby garment adapted to'surround the body of the baby, in combination with a lashing at the middle zone of the lower or foot-end of the front-side of the garment, two ribbons fastened to the garment at the two ends of the lashing respectively and passed loosely through the lashing to the opposite sides of the garment, and extending over the garment and over the bed loosely to the two sides respectively, to be fastened with their free ends to some middle parts of their coordinate sides of the bed.

4. A safety device for holding a baby in bed, comprising a baby garment adapted to surround the body of the baby, in combination with a hemstitch along a part of the circumference of the lower or foot-end of the garment, and a ribbon passed through and partially slidable within the hemstitch and extending loosely to both sides over the bed, the two ends of which ribbon are to be fixed at some'middle parts of the sides of the bed.
