To all w Ito m, it may concern Be it known that I, ERNns'r L. CHAPMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hyde Park, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Show Cases, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to show cases for the display of articles of merchandise. The show case to which my invention is particularly adapted is of that type in which the top is formed in two parts, one stat onar and horizontal and one slidable, the slidable portion being inclined downwardly from the rear edge of the stationary 1001131011.
The object of the invention is .toprov1de a show case of the class hereinbefore set forth which can'be opened from the rear of the show case by the salesman and which, when closed, is tight and protects the goods from dust andthe like. i
The invention consists in the combination and arrangementof parts set forth in the particularly pointed outin the claim-thereof.

In the drawings, referring to Figures 1 to 4 inclusive, 9 is the casing and 10is the top of the show case which embodies two memhers, a stationarymember ll'and a slidable member 12. 13 is the front of the show case, 14 the bottom and 15 is the stationary rear portion or back plate of the show case having an inclined upper edge 15'. The stationary member 11 consists of a metal frame the show case, the stop and projecting bars of the slidable member 12. The rolls Serial No. 434,488.
formed of a front bar 16, a rear bar 17 and two side bars 18. A. glass panel 19 is provided in the stationary member 11 and another glass panel 20 is provided in the front of the show case. The member 12 is a slidable member adapted to slide from the inclined position illustrated in Figure 1 to occupy a horizontal position beneath the member 11, thus opening the case so that the salesman can get at the goods in the interior thereof. The slidable member12 consists of a front bar 21 and a rear bar 21 connected together by side bars 22 and 23. vThe rear bar 21' rests upon the inclined upper edge 15. of the back plate 15 when the member 12 is in closed position. The said member 12 is provided with a glass panel 24 and has a pair ofstop pins 25 fast'to the rear bar 21 as illustrated in Figure l; The stop pins 25 each bear against a stop plate 26 which is pivoted at 56 to the back plate 15 of the showcase, as shown in Fig. 4. The stop plate 26 has a downwardly projecting flange '57 thereon which rests upon the inner face of the back plate 15 and this is the particular portion of the stop plate against which the stop pins 25 abut when the member 12 is in closed position. hen it is desired to remove the member 12 from the show case entirely, or to place the same on the show case, the stop plates 26 are swung inwardly as illustrated in dotted lines, Fig. 4, and the member 12 can then be slid downwardly across the inclined upper edge 15 and off of pins 25 passing through slots 58 provided in the upper edge of the back plate 15, these slots being closed to prevent the stop pins 25 from sliding therethrough when the stop plate is in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 4. The member 12 is provided at each end thereof with a pair of guide members 27 and 28 each consisting preferablyof a roll 29 mounted upon a pin 30, the pin 30 being fastened to longitudinally from the side 29 at each end of the slidable member 12 project into slots 31 and 32provided in the sidebars 18 forming a portion of the easing 9 and ofthe stationary member 11. It
will be noted that the median horizontal plane A of the guideway slot 31 intersects the median plane B of the slot 32 at the center of the guide member 27, and that the roll 29 constituting a portion of said guide member 27 rest-s partly in each of the slots 31 and 32. The upper corner 33 of the slidable member 12 is in close proximity to and preferably bears against the underside of the bar 17, and the bar 21 of the member 12 rests against the top edge f the back 15 of the show case so that the show case is thereby rendered tight and prevents dust and any other undesirable matters or materials from entering the show case.
In operating the show case the slidable member 12 is pushed from the bottom edge thereof toward the front of the show case and the guide members 27 will pass along the horizontal slot 31, while the guide members 28 pass upwardly along the slot 32 until the slidable member 12 assumes a horizontal position beneath the stationary member 11. Midway between its inclined and closed position and its horizontal or open position the slidable member 12 assumes the position illustrated in dotted lines in Figure 1.
In Figures 5, 6 and 7 I have illustrated another embodiment of my invention adapted to show cases in which the framework and top member sashes are made of wood. Referring now to Figures 5, 6 and 7, 34 is the front of the case, 35 the bottom, 36 the back plate having an inclined upper edge 36', 37 the stationary member of the top and 38 the slidable member of the top. The front 34 is provided with a panel of glass 39, the stationary top is provided with a panel of glass 40 and the slidable member of the top is provided with a panel of glass 41. The stationary top consists of a front bar 42, a rear bar 43 and side bars 44, said front and rear bars 42 and 43 and side bars 44 forming a portion of the casing 9 of the show case and also supports for the glass panel 40 of the stationary member of the top of the show case. The frame of the slidable member 38 of the top consists of a front bar 45, rear bar 46 and side bars 47 and 48. The rear bar 46 rests upon the inclined upper edge 36 when in closed position. Each of the side bars has a pair of guide members 49 projecting therefrom longitudinally of the case and said guide members each consist of a screw 50 with a roll 51 rotatably mounted'thereon. These guide members project into slots 52 and 53 in the side bars 44 of the case, the slot 53 being horizontal and extending across and beneath the stationary top portion 37, while the slot 52 is inclined and extends across the slidable member 38 of the top.
It will be noted that the median horizon tal plane C of the slot 53'intersects a median plane D of the slot 52 at the axis of the proj ections 49 at the upper end of the inclined slidable member 38 of the top of the show cease and that when the inclined member of the show case is in closed position as illustrated in Figure 5, said member 49 rests partly in each of the slots 52 and 53. Stop pins 54 are provided on the slidable member 38 which rest against plates 55 pivoted to the back 36 of the show case in a similar manner to that in which the stop plate 26 is pivoted to the back plate 15 as hereinbefore described and illustrated in Fig. 4.
The operation of opening and closing the show case is the same as hereinbefore described. To open the show case the slidable member 38 is pushed toward the rear, the guide member 49 at the upper end thereof passing along the horizontal slot 53 and the guide member 49 at the lower end thereof passing upwardly along the slot 52 until the slidable member 38 assumes a horizontal position beneath the stationary member 37 of the top. To close the show case the slidable member 38 is pulled toward the rear until it assumes the position illustrated in Figure 5.
I claim:
A show case having, in combination, a casing including a back plate, a top for said show case in two parts comprising a stationary member and a slidable member located normally at an angle to and extending downwardly and rearwardly from the rear edge of said stationary member, a 'pair of guide members extending longitudinally from opposite ends of said movable member into guideways provided in said casing at opposite ends of said movable member, said guideways each consisting of a horizontal portion extending across and beneath said stationary member and an inclined portion opening into the rear end of said horizontal portion and extending downwardly at an angle therefrom, a stop pin fast to said slidable member, and a stop plate pivotally mounted upon the back plate of said show case and adapted to be engaged by said stop pin when said slidable member is in closed position, said back plate being provided with a slot through which said guide pin can pass when said stop plate is out of alignment therewith.
