To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DAVID CLAGETT, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Mattress or Cushion, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in a mattress or cushion, and has for its object to provide means for stiffening the sides thereof-whereby they will always be maintained in a smooth upright condition.

Another object of the invention is to provide a pocket or pockets in the side walls of the cover of a mattress, cushion or like article whereby a suitable stiffening element or elements ma be readily inserted in. the pocket or pockets for retaining the side walls of the article in an unwrinkled upright condition.

With these ends in View, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim.

In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains, may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numerals to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in which Fig. 1, is a side elevation of a mattress illustrating the embodiment of my invention.

Fig. 2, is a plan view thereof.

Fig. 3, is-an enlarged fragmentary sectional View of the cover illustrating the arran 'ement of one of the pockets and the stifi ening member therein.

My invention is applicable to any size or shape of mattress, cushion or like article and for conveniences of illustration 1 have shown an ordinary rectangular mattress. It is to be understood that the term mattress as Serial No. 545,007.

here used includes one consisting of a suitable cover or ticking filled with cotton, feathers or other suitable filler with the pockets produced on said cover or such a mattress in a supplementary cover having the pockets formed therewith or a box spring 1n its ordinary or the supplementary cover. In carrying out my invention as herein illustrated, 2 represents the cover or envelope having pockets 3 of the same material surrounding the sides either formed from the cover 6 or formed separately and afterwards attached to the side wall portions of said cover.

In the pocket or pockets thus provided is placed a stiffening member 4 either in one piece or in a number of sections which completely fills the pocket or pockets thus retaining the side walls in an unwrinkled upright condition and this stiffening member may be either heavy cardboard, wood, metal or other suitable material.

The pockets and stiffening members are of less height than the thickness or height of the mattress so that when any weight is applied to the mattress it will not be compressed below the upper edge of the stiffening element and therefore said stiffening element will not in any way interfere with the person of the user or occupant so that no discomfort ensues from the use of such stiffening elements.
