fLERIOK MAUSSNER, QB COLLINGSWOOD, NEW JERSEY, A'SSI GNOR TO HENRY WILHELM COMPANY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
MATTRESS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK MAUSSNER, a citizen of Germany, residing at Collingswood in the county of Camden and State oil New Jersey, U. S. A, have invented certain I new and useful Improvements in a Mattrem, j
.extendingover all. the com artrnents to insure an even surface for of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in mattresses, cushions and the like. The
object of my invention is to construct a mattress or cushion in sections, said sections each being provided with removable filling portions which are interchangeable, thus permitting a fillin portion, which has become compremed rom use in the mattrem, to be shifted ,to a different position in'the mattress and one of the other filling'portions which has had less use to be substituted therefor; a further object of my in vention is to make the 'filli portions in separable layers so that said ayers are-in;- r terchangeable with each other, and I; 'also provide themattress with a sheet of waterproof material located between the layers of the fillin of the main section of the mattress, an a still further object of'nry inven tion is to construct the casing or ticking in se arate sections or compartments, one of w ich is a multiple-of a smaller compartment so that the fillingportions may be used in either a large or small compartment and said compartments of the casing may be secured or hinged together so that the mattress may be readily folded into a compact form for handling.
Referring to the accompanying drawing: Fig. 1, is a sectional perspective view illustrating my improved mattress; Fig. 2, is a view similar to Fi 1, showing the mattress in the folded position; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the mattres showing the. filling portions in a diiferent pom'tion; Fig. 4, is a longitudinal section of the mattress showing a different form of filling portions;
and Fi 5 is a longitudinal section of a' modifie vention.
In the drawing, in which like reference characters refer to like parts, 1 represents the casing, or tickin forming the mattress or cushion The casing 1 is divided throughout its length into sections,or compartments, 2,' 3, and 4. The central or-main compartform of mattress embodying my in- Specification of Letters y atent.
' the casing Patented July 25, 1922.
appuoauonmea July 3.0, 1920. Serial No. 395,324.
The top sheet offabric 6 of the casing l is preferably made in one continuous piece,
said sheet of fabric 6 forms a means for see mattress and curing the sections of the mattress together,
so that they may be folded into the position shown in Fig. 2, in which the mattress may with flaps 8, secured together by fastening devices, 9, as shown in Figs. 1, and 2; thus providing openin for the insertion and removal of the filling portions 12 and 13.
The filling portions are made in layers of one-half the thickness. of the mattress so that either two layers may be used, one on top of the other, or only used b folding it upon itself, thus giving a doub. e thickness to the filling portion.
Each layer of the filling portions 12 and I I 13 consists of hair, or fiber 15, secured upon fabric, such asa sheet of burlap 16, by interlacing the hair or fiber upon the burlap in a manner well known to those skilled in the art. The sheetsof burlap will hold the, hair or fiber, when interlaced thereon, in a'compact form so that a filling portion may be 'readily inserted or removed from a compartment of the casing.
Thefilling portions are preferably made as shown in Fig. 1, in which the filling portions 12 for the end compartments 2 and 4: of are made coextensive in size therewith, and the filling portions 13, for the central or main compartment 3, are made coextensive in size with the latter compartenter and fill the smaller compartment of the casing, as shown in Fig. 3.
one large layer ment. One of the larger sized filling por- In Fig. 4, the fillin portions 20 are shown to be all of the same imensions. The filling portions 20 are used in the large compartment of the casin by placing said filllngportions edge to e ge'. in the same horlzontal plane. 3 I I. I

A sheet of water-proof material is laced'in the mattress betweenthe upper-andower layers of the filling portions of the main compartment of the mattress. providing a pitals. y proof material 30, in the mattress in this manner, any moisture will be confined to the upper layer of the filling material, and the latter may be removed and cleaned without the necessity of cleaning theother filling portions-of the mattress.
Having thus described my invention I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
. forming a compartment, said sections adapted to be arranged edge to ed e, one of said compartments being a multi e of a smaller compartment, removable filling portions arrangedin superimposed layers within each compartment, and said filling layers adapted interchangeable by and lowerfilling layers 0 placing the upper the smaller compartmentln the same lane :to form an upper or lower filling layer or the larger compartment and by lacing an upper or lower filling layer of; the iarger compartment in different lanes within the smaller compartment to orm upper and lower filling layers.
'2. A mattress comprising, a casing divided into separate compartments adapted to be Thus mattress suitableior use in hospositioning the sheet of waterarranged edge to edge, one of said compartments being a multiple of a smaller compartment, removable filling portions arranged in superimposed layers adapted to be interchangeable within said compartments, and
one of said'layers of the filling being co-extensive in size with the larger compartment and adapted to be folded upon itself and occu y the smaller compartment of the casing. n testimon whereof I afiix my si nature.
