MATTRESS.
APPLICATION FILED NIM/11,1921.
- UNT-EP STATES PATENT OFFICE..
lmozas VAN GELDER, `or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
MATTRESS.
i Application inea May 11,
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, Mozns VAN GELDER, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inMattresses, of which the following is a specification.
` The main objects of this invention are to provide a mattress having an improved arrangement of the filling whereby the mat- -tress affords the maximum support about that portion wherev thegreatest weight of the body, resting thereupon, is likely to be disposed; to provide an improved construction and arrangement of the layers of filling so as to afford an extra body of filling in the middle portion of the mattress; and to provide such a construction and arrangement of the layers whereby there is a small and gradual tapering from the'middle of themattress toward the ends thereof.
An illustrative embodiment ofv this invention is shown in the accompanying drawings wherein the figure is a sectional perspective of a mattress constructed in accordance with this invention.
In the specific embodiment herein illustrated the mattress comprises the usual tick or covering 1 enveloping a plurality of layers 2 of felt-like material tufted together as indicated in the. drawings, and where desired, provided with a roll edge 3.
The layers A at both sides of the intermediate layers 5 extend from end to end of the mattress and preferably from side to side also. The intermediate layers `5, the number of which may vary depending upon the thickness of the mattress, are of less length than the mattress and extend from one end or the other'to points between the respective opposite end and the transverse medial plane of the mattress. These intermediate layers are alternated with each other, that is, the one extending from one end is superposed upon therone extending from the opposite end. Also the intermediate layers are gradually reduced lengths from the innermost layer outward. For example, the two innermost layers 6 and 7 extend to a point approximately half-way between the respective opposite end of the mattress and the medial transverse plane thereof, Whereas the layers 8 and 9, and 10 and 1l, respectively, disposed on opposite sides of the layers 6 and 7, have their'in- Specification of Lettersvlatent. Patented Sept. 6, 1921.
1921. Serial No. 468,656.
nermost ends terminating nearer the transverse medial plane of the mattress than do the ends of the innermost layers 6 and 7.
This arrangement of the intermediate layers provides an extra amount of filling about the middle portion of the mattress,
f where the greatest weight of the body lying upon the mattress is likely to be disposed. The result is that a mattress of this kind is much less likely to have depressions or ridges formed therein.
Although but one specific embodiment of this invention has been herein shown and described,it will be understood that numerous details of the construction shown may be altered or omittedjvithout departing from the spirit of this invention as defined by the following claims. l
I claim: y
.1. A mattress, comprising a suitable covering and a plurality of superposed layers of filling, the. layers at both sides of the intermediate layers extending from end to end of the mattress, said intermediate layers extending from one end or the other to points between the respective opposite. end and the transverse medial plane of the mattress.
2. A mattress, comprising a suitable covering and a plurality of superposed layers of filling, the layers at both sides of the intermediatel layers extending from end to end of the mattress, said intermediate layers extending from one end 0r the other to points between the respective opposite end and the transverse medial plane of the mattressE the intermediate layers extending from one end having their overlapping inner ends alternated with the layers extending from the other end.
3. A mattress, comprising a suitable covering and a plurality of superposed layers of filling, the layers at both sides of the intermediate layers extending from end to end of the mattress, said intermediate layers extending from one end or the other to points between the respective opposite end and the transverse medial plane of the mattress, said intermediate layers being of gradually reduced length from the innermost layer outwardly.
4. A mattress, comprising a suitable covering and a plurality of superposed layers of filling, the layers at both sides of the intermediate layers extending from end to end of the mattress, Vsaid intermediate layers extending from one end or the other to points between the respective opposite end and the transverse medial plane of the mate tress, said intermediate layers being of gradually reduced length from the innerlmost layer outwardly, and the layers extending from one end having their overlapping inner ends alternated With the layers extending from 4the other end.
, Signed at Chicago this 7th day of May,
MOZES VANl GELDER.
