Description

May 7, 1929. c. wEsTERMAN FooT sTo'oL Filed Nov. 22, 1927 42765 @Sie/mf@ INVENTOR O "Y O ATTOR N EY Patented May 7, 1929.
unirse` STATES CHARLES WESTERMAN, OF BRDOKLYN, NEW YORK.
`Foors'roon.
Y Application filed November 22, 1927i Serial No. 235,083.
' This invention relates to improvements in toot stools.
rlihe primary object oft the invention resides in a toot stool. which is light in weight tor 'liacilitatiinf the easy handling ot the saine during,- shipment and when in use, and which is accomplished by providing), a relatively spaced reinforcing (ihre falls tor bracing;` all ot the walls o'li the body to prevent any possible collapse thereot when subjected to any ordinary strains.
A further object is to simplify the Construction and manufacture ot toot stools, and reduce the cost thereof. Y
lilith these and other objects in view, the invention res' les in certa-in novel construe* tion and Combination and arrangement o parts, the essential Jfeatures ot which are hereinafter 'fully deseril'ied, are particularly pointed out in the appended claims, and are lillustrated in the accompanying;` drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view ot my improved 'toot stool. with a portion. broken away in section.
Figure 2 through.
Figure is a horizontal sectional view on the line 3 3 ot Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a perspective view ot the body ot the stool wit-h the reinforcing element removed therefrom.
Referring' to the drawings by reference characters, the num eral designates my iinproved toot stool in its entirety which includes a hoX-lilre libre body 11 oit any desired shape and which is constructed ol reinforced cardboard such as used in cardl'umrd cartons and the like. In reality, the body is no more than a cardboard carton and in the present instance, the same is shownas rectangular in configuration and comprises side walls 12, bottom. wall 13, and top wall 14e. The side walls are continuous but the top and bottom walls are termed by a plurality of Foldable flaps 15 hin ,eed to the side/walls and foldable to a position to overlap each other and provide an entirely closed top and bottom walls.
)detained within the body 11 is a fibre re l is a vertical sectional view thereinforcing element ltwhich is :Fitted into the body through either the top or bottom when the flaps are in an open position, and which comprises a plurality ot spaced longitudinal walls 17 and a plurality ot spaced transverse walls 18. The walls 1.7 and 18 are suitably notched to provide interlocking engagement with eachother at their intersections, the spaces between the walls defining hollow cells which lightens the Weight ot the body. By reason ot the crossing of the reiniorcin.n walls,` and the fact that the element 1G snugly lits within the box-like body, the walls of the body will be rigidly braced on all. sides.
A layer of padding.;r n'iaterialv 19 is placed on the top wall 14- ol the body and a covering o'l' velour 19 or other decorative material is applied over the top and sides of the body and folded under the bottom where the free edges of the material are brought taut and held by stitching,r or the like. A strip oi oilcloth or the like 20 overlaps the free edges of the covering' 19 and is suitably stitched thereto to give the bottom a finished appearance and protect the bottom trom wear when sliding the stool over the floor. A cord 2l. passes centrally tl'lrough the body and has buttons 22 at opposite ends thereof abutting the top and bottom ot the stool to compress the padding to bold the top ot the covering.,v smooth and impart thereto, the appearance oi a cushion. Tabs extend Yfrom the sides ot the toot stool by which it may be picked up for transporting from place to place in a room.
From the foregoing (ileseriptiou, it will be manifest that I have constructed a 'toot stool whichis exceptionally light in weight. strongf and rigid in construction, and which has all ot the outward appearances ot the solid toot stools now on the market.
-W'hile I have described what I deem to be the most desirable embodiment ot my invention, it is obvious that many o'l' the details may be varied without in any way departing from the spirit ot my invention, und l therefore do not limit myself to the exact details ot construction herein set 'forth nor to anything: less than the whole of my invention limited only by the appended claims.
What is claimed as new isz- 1. A foot stool comprising a hollow boi:- like body. spaced reinforcing walls within said body, a padding of materialv upon thetop ot' said body, an outer covering of matmial passing?? over said padding and the walls et said body ind-fixed thereon, and it binding oord passing through said body, padding and covering andhavingbuttons on the free ends thereof.
'2. A footstool Comprising,r :1v hollow boxlike body, spaced reinforcing Walls Within said body, a padding of material upon the CHARLES VESTERMAN.
