Be it known that I, Josrrii KAHN, a. citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago7 in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in a Loose-Leaf Binder; and l do hereby'declare that the following is a full,` clear7 and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates more particularly to an improved type of a loose leaf binder wherein longitudinally adjustable posts are adapted to be removably loclred to a binder cover by locking members movably `mounted on the binder cover.

lt is an obj ect of this invention to provide abinder wherein a binding post having an apertured end is adapted to be locked in position by means of a locking member adjustably mounted on a binder cover.

Itis also an object of the invention to provide abinder wherein a baclr has hingedly connected thereto side members to which covers are liingedly attached, said covers car-v rying locking members thereon adapted to removably engage `the ends of adjustable loose leaf posts.

`Another object of the invention is the construction of a loose leaf binder the covers of which are adapted for carrying locking members for retaining binder posts in position.

lt is an important object of this invention to provide an improved loose leaf binder of simple and effective construction wherein posts are adapted to be pivotally connected to the binder covers for holding loose leaves in place.

Other and further important objects of this invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the specification and drawings.

The invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.

post section and has an apertured lug or eye 1e integrally formed diametrically on the outer face thereof as shown in Figure 3. Each post section 11 is provided with a longitudinal row of internally threaded holes or openings 15 for the purpose of removably receiving the threaded ends of retaining screws 16, a plurality of which are carried by each post section 12. The screw holes in each post section 12 are countersunk to receive the heads of the screws 16 seated therein. By removing the screws 16 the length of a binding post may be varied to suit requirements. One end of a binding post is locked to a binder cover by engaging t-he eye 111 between two of the binder plate eyes 8 and then projecting a hook 9 through the registering openings of said eyes. The leaves 10 may then be engaged on the post, after which the other end of the post is locked to the other binder cover by engaging a hook 9 through the eyes 8 and 14. It will thus be noted that loose leaves 10 may be easily and conveniently engaged on either or both ends of a binding post by simply opening the b-inder and disengaging the hooks 9 from the eyes 8 and 14.

Figure 7 discloses a modified form of an improved type of binder wherein the covers and binding posts are constructed similar to those illustrated in Figure 1. In this case, however, the cover plates 6 are replaced by cover plates 17. `Slidably engaged on each plate 17 is a locking member comprising a bar or plate 18 knurled at 19 and having longitudinal slots 20 therein. Arms 21 are integrally formed at right angles on both ends of the locking plate 18 and each of said arms has a locking pin or lug 22 integrally formed thereon at right angles. The locking pins are both directed in the same direction and are adapted to be removably engaged in the eyes 14 of the binding posts to hold loose leaves in place. Set screws 23 pro-ject through the locking plate slots 2O and engage in the cover plates 17 to guide and limit the movement of the locking plates.

The operation of the modified form of device shown in Figure 7 appears self-evident` In this .case operation of a locking plate 18 acts to either lock or unlock a plurality of binding posts with one operation to permit loose leaves to be secured in place or removed from the binder as the case may be. It will of course be understood that if desired one piece binding posts having integral end eyes may be used in place of the adjustable binding posts shown and described.

Figures 8 to 10 inclusive illustrate another modified form of a binder wherein only one end oi the binding posts are adapted to be removably locked to a binder cover, the

other ends of the binding posts being rigidly secured in place.

In this lcase the binder comprises a back 24 having hinged to the sides thereof side sections 25 and 26. The side section 26 is wider than the side section 25 and has hingedly connected thereto a binder cover 27. Rigidly secured at right angles on the inner face of the wide side section 26 are a plurality of binding posts 28, on the free ends ot' which are integrally formed aperu tured lugs or eyes 29. Loose leaves 30 are adapted to be engaged on the binding posts 28.

Hinged to the narrow side section 25 is a binder cover 31 of a width greater than the width of the cover 27 to compensate 'ter the difference in widths of the side sections 25 and 26. A metal strip or plate 32 is secured in the inner tace of the cover 31 adjacent the hinged margin, and pivotally mounted on said plate are a plurality oit locking hooks 33. Eyes 34 are integrally formed on the inner edge 'of the plate 32 and are arranged in pairs to receive the eyes 29 of the binding posts therebetween to permit the locking hooks 33 to lockingly engage throughthe registering openings of said eyes to lock the binding posts to the cover 31.

I am aware that numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles oi this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the'patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the scope of the appended claims.

I claim as my invention:

1. A loose leaf binder comprising a back sect-ion, covers hinged thereto, plates secured on said covers, eyes formed on said plates, binding posts, eyes formed thereon adapted to be engaged between the eyes on said plates, and hooks pivotally mounted on said plates adapted to be engaged througl'i said plate eyes and said binding post eyes to hold the binding posts. locked in position.

2. The combination with a pair of binder covers, of'binding posts connecting the same and each comprising a pair ot interlitting sections, heads formed at right angles on said sections, eyes formed on said heads, one of said sections having threaded openings therein, and screws on the other section adapted to be threaded into said openings to removably hold the sections locked in an adjusted position.
