Be it known that l, PETER Bunker, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful `lfmprovement in Egg Cartons, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to collapsible cartons of a well known type in which the end walls are hung at their upper corners to the side walls so that the end walls may either lie flat on the bottom wall when the carton is collapsed or stand at right angles to the bottom wall. rlihis type of carton is usually made up in a cellular form, the end walls being similar to a plurality of other walls which form transverse partitions, and there being an interlocking longitudinal partition which holds the transverse walls upright. Even where the end walls are reinforced as by means of a longitudinal partition, there is a tendency for the lower corner of the end walls to bend outwardly under pressure within the carton and the object of the present invention is to provide a simple and novel locking means to prevent such cornersv from being pushed outwardly; without adding to the initial cost of the carton.

rThe various features of novelty whereby my invention is characterized will hereinafter be pointed out with particularity in the claims; but, for a full understanding of my invention and of its objects and advantages, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in-connection with -the accompanying drawing, wherein:

Figure 1 is a perspective View of a carton embodying my improvements, in the process of having its partitions placed in proper working positions; and

Fig. 2 is a View similar to Fig. l showing the carton ready for use.

Referring to the drawing, 1,2 and 3 represent respectively the front, back and bottom of a carton and 4 the cover of the carton. 5, 5 are transverse partitions connected at their upper front corners to the front side of the carton and at the upper rear corners to a longitudinal strip 6 which i's fastened Serial No. 526,481.

This arrangement permits the partitions to be swung from aplane parallel with the bottom of the carton into separate planes at right angles to the bottom; the first position being that which the partitions occupy when the carton is collapsed and the second position being that which the partitions occupy when the carton is opened and made ready for use. 7 is a longitudinal partition adapted to be inserted in the carton in any usual or suitable way. ln the bottom wall of the carton, near the end thereof are made incisions of semi-circular or other shape which will serve to form partially severed ears 8, 8 which, when the carton is opened, may be bent upwardly as indicated in Fig. 2 so as to lie against the outer face of the adjacent' end wall or partition 5, serving as abutments or stops to prevent the lower marginal portions of the end wall from being pushed outwardly.

llt will thus be seen that without adding any additional material or increasing the expense in any way whatsoever except the making of a slight change in the dies for blanking the carton, l am able to produce a carton which will be greatly reinforced and strengthened at the ends and will therefore give much better service than the carton in its unimproved form.

While l have illustrated and described with particularity only a single preferred form of my invention, l do not desire to be limited to the exact structural details thus illustrated and described; but intend to cover all forms and arrangements which come within the terms employed in the definitions of my invention constituting the appended claims.

l claim:

1. A carton having side and bottom walls, a transverse wall connected at its upper corners only to the two opposed side walls so as to swing from a position in which it lies parallel with the bottom wall to a position in which it extends at right angles to the bottom wall, said bottom wall having an ear struck up therefrom in position to engage with and lie Hat against the lower marginal portion of said transverse wall when the latter is swung into the position at right angles to the bottom wall.

2. A carton havingtwo side walls and a bottom wall, a series of transverse partitions connected at their upper corners only to the twoopposed side walls so as to permit the partitions to swing from positions in a common plane parallel with the bottom of the carton to positions in separated parallel planes extending at right angles to said bottom, two of said partitions forming end walls. for the carton, and said bottom wall having an incision so shaped and located that an ear may be bent upwardly. l

3. A carton having side walls and a bottom wall, an end wall extending between said side walls across and disconnected from the bottom wall, and an ear struck up from said bottom wall and engaging with and lying lat against the outer face of said end wall.
