XNVENTOR WITNESS:
Wat/ A BY 7 Patented Sept. 26, 1922.
UNITED TES WILLIAM HENRY BURNS, OF CARBONDALE, ILLINOIS.
OIL BOX.
Application filed May 17,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. BURNS, citizen of the United States, residing at Carbondale, in the county of Jackson and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Oil Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in journal boxes for railway cars and street cars and the like and has for an object the provision of a lid which will be held against accidental opening and which, when opened, will remain in position until purposely closed.
Another object is the provision of a lid for journal boxes which is simple in construction and operation and. in which the use of springs or other complicated elements are dispensed with, the result being a lid of exceedingly simple character, which may be quickly opened or closed and which will not easily get out of repair.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of a journal box showing the lid in closed position.
Figure 2 is a central vertical sectional view of the same.
Figure 3 is a similar View with the lid open.
Referring to the drawings in detail, like characters of reference denote correspond ing parts throughout the several views.
In illustrating the invention, there is shown a journal box 10 of the usual configuration and which is provided at its outer end with the usual opening 11. The upper end of this box is provided with a lug 12 which is substantially circular in cross section, being connected to the box by a neclr or web 13.
The lid which is connected at 14 is adapted to close the opening lland is pivotally secured to the box 10. For this purpose, the lid is provided with an extension 14; which is hollowed out to provide a chamber 15 for the reception of the lug 12, the end walls of the said chamber providing spaced cars 16 which have aligned openings 1920. Serial Nd. 381,961.
therein. These openings are adapted to reg- ,ister with an opening 17 formedlongitudiwhich when the lid is raised is adapted to engage a shoulder 19 formed longitudinally of the lug 12, the engagement being such that the pressure upon the outer end of the lid will disengage the flange and shoulder and permit the lid to be closed.
The opposite or outer end of the lid 14 is provided with a longitudinally extending flange 20 which when the lid is closed will engage beneath the shoulder 21 formed beneath the lower edge of the openings 11. When the flange 20 and shoulder 21 are thus engaged, the lid will beheld against accidental openin By means of the construction just described, the journal box lid will be securely held in closed position, but may be readily opened for the purpose of oiling the bear ing and will be held in such open position until purposely closed through the engagement of the flange 18 and the shoulder 19.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention what is claimed is The combination with a journal box and a lid hingedly secured thereto, of an apertured lug carried by the box and receiving a hinged pin to connect the lid to the box, an extension formed on the lid and receiving the apertured lug, a lip provided along the edge of the extension, a shoulder formed on the lug for engagement by the extension to hold the lid in open position, a lug extending from the edge of the box beneath the entrance opening and a lip extending from the lower edge of the lid for engage-.
ment beneath the last mentioned lug to hold the lid in closed position.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
WILLIAM HENRY BURNS.
