Be it known that 1, JOHN T. WATTS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented a. new and useful Pair of Suspenders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to suspenders such as are commonly used for supporting trousers and the like and the principal object of my invention is to produce such an article of simple form and construction so arranged that no pressure is placed upon the back bone of the wearer, a further object be ing to make an article of: the class described which is readily and automatically ad ustable to the movement of the wearer.
Referring to the drawings, which are for illustrative purposes only,
Fig. 1 is an illustrative view of the suspenders as worn, the View showing the back of the suspenders.
Fig. 2 is a view of the entire suspenders, the shoulder straps being folded back upon themselves.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of the back portion of the suspenders, and
Fig. 4 is a view of halt of the portion of the suspenders shown in Fig. 3 on a much larger scale.
These suspenders comprise two shoulder straps, indicated at 11, which are independ ent of each other in the respect that they do not cross each other nor are they attached directly to each other. These straps are made of any suitable webbing and are adjustable as to length by means o1 a common Form of adjusters 12 on the end of a loop! 13 which extends through a flattened eye 14 to which is attached in any suitable manner the front ends 15, each provided with buttonhole tips 16 for securing the same to the garment. The back end of each strap 11 is secured to a flattened eye 18 to which is pivotally connected by means of a headed pin 19 a grooved upper guide 20 through which slidably extends a round cord 21 forming a part of what may be termed the back adjuster generally indicated at 22.
The cord 21 is provided with two downwardly extending legs 23 which terminates in buttonhole tips 24 by means of which the adjuster is secured to the garment. The cord passes through the upper guides 20 and is formed into a loop 25 between the legs 23, such loop being formed by loop guides 26 1921, Serial no; 470,554.
through which the cord slidably extends. Each loop guide 26 is pivotally mounted by means of a headed pin 27 to a clasp or pivot member 28 which is clamped or otherwise secured in fixed relation to the cord 21.
Slidably mounted on the loop between the loop guides 26, is a pair of slip bands 30 which are movable on the cord being for the purpose of spacing apart the legs of the adjuster as there is a tendency for the straps to come togetherin the back when worn by persons having square shoulders. The two lower ends of the adjuster are spaced apart by a tie strap ears 32 secured to the cord and upper end of the straps 24;, such tie strap being provided with an adjuster 33 of any common form so that the distance between the legs of the adjuster may be adjusted to suit the wearer.
t will be noted that the shoulder straps which may be of elastic or non-elastic material pull upwardly on the back adjuster, the cord sliding through the upper guides and the loop guides to accommodate the position of the straps according to the movement of the person wearing the suspenders, that is, an entirely free adjustment is provided as the two sides of the adjuster correspondingly shorten and lengthen to accommodate the change of position of the straps. In no position is any pressure exerted on the middle of the back, the strain being in all cases in the line of extension or" the straps.
I claim as my invention:
1.. A pair of suspenders comprising a pair of shoulder straps; attaching means connected to the front ends of said straps; upper guides secured to the back end of salid straps; a looped cord slidably extending through said guides; a pivot member secured to each leg of said cord; a loop guide on each pivot member through which the loop in the cord slidably extends; slip bands on said cord between said loop guides; an ad justable tie strap connecting the legs of the cord together; and a buttonhole tip on each end of said cord.
2. A pair of suspenders comprising a pair of shoulder straps; attaching means connected to the front ends of said straps; upper guides secured to the back end of said straps; a looped cord slidably extending through said guides; a pivot member secured to each leg of said cord; a loop guide on each pivot member through which the loop in the cord slidably extends; slip bands on said cord be- 31 which extends through the straps; and a pair of loop guides fixed to said cord for slidably engaging the looped 10 portion of the cord.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at Los Angeies, Californian this 10th day of May, 1921 JOHN T, WATTIS.
