PATENT oFF-loes;
Application filed January 26, 1920. Serial No. 353,968.
in Boxes, of which the following is a speci-k iication.
My present invention relates to improvements in boxes having hinged covers of the type which are largely used in packing jewelry, safety razors, perfumes, toile-t sets, and
like articles for shipment and display.
In such boxes as used for display purposes the strain on the hinge leaves has heretofore required the box members to be formed of relatively strong and rigid material such as metal, wood or the like, and especially is this true of those boxes embodyingl a spring hinge which automatically holds the cover in open or closed position. ,A
The present invention aims to provide a construction by which the body yof the box may be made of paper or cardboard or similar inexpensive material which will nevertheless be strong and durable; and the invention includes the novel features of construction and arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and particularly defined by the appended claims.
An embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which- Fig. l is a perspective view of a box hav'- ing a spring hinge cover, with the cover in its open position.
Fig. 2 is a sectional plan of the ber,and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of Fig. l.
Fig. 4 is a view of a modification.
Fig. 5 is a view of the hinge and reinforcements of the box bottom dismantled.
Referring by reference characters to this drawing, the numeral 1 designates the body of the box and 2 the cover. These are, for convenience, shown as of' rectangular form. but it will be understood that the shape of the box is immaterial as it might be round hexagonal, or in fact, any shape desired.
box mein- The end walls la and 2a of the box and its" cover are connected respectively by the hinge leaves 3a and 3b and are acted upon by the spring 4 which tends to hold the cover in either an open or closed position in the manf ner well understood by those skilled in the art.
This action is preferably secured by khavy a height commensurate with end wall of the box, and
ing a spring carrying device consistiiigv of two hinged plates a'and 5b which are pivct- 'l ally connected together by the intermediate portion 4"J1 ofthe S shaped spring passing through aligning eyes onl the plates Aaand ob, the terminal portions of the springs bearing against the faces of the plates asshown. The outer extremities of the plates 5a and 5* are overturned to engage the outer edges of the hinge ymembers-as shown ata'and Z) respectively, said hinge plates having struck up portions a and o to receive and countersink said overturned ends of the plates.
In order that thefbox may be constructedl of card board, or like relatively weak inaterial, I provide the box inforcing hinge carrying respectively, l
members 6 and 7 which are preferably made of with the height of the box and cover walls. These members are shaped to' conform to a sufficient portion ofthe box and cover to secure the desired bracing effect, and in the form shown, comprise ends bars 6"L and 7? co-operating side wings 6b and 7b extending along the side walls for a suitable distance. o connected to the end bars 6a and 7a in any suitable manner, but I prefer to provide the hinge leaves with slots lb and 21? and the bars 6a with corresponding slots, through which slots are passed the overturned `ends 6C of a bar c, these ends being clenched or bent over as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
The reinforcing members may be secured tothe end and side walls of the box and cover respectively in any suitable manner, as by glue, yrivets or the like. lI prefer to make the side and end walls of double thickness of cardboard, to this end, placing within the said side and end walls, lining or reinand cover with re- The hinge leaves may be forcing strips 8, the members G and 7 lying 'between the inner and outer layers of the outer layf this lining or padding Having thus described my invention what I claim is 1. In combination, a box of fibrous material, Comprising tivo tray like members Connected by a spring hinge at one end, ref,Y
2. In Combination, a boX ofvfibrous material, comprising two tray like members having laminated Walls connected by a spring hinge at one end, reinforcing plates of fiat sheet metal embedded in the Walls vvhich Carry the hinges', said plates and the hinge leaves having aligning slots, and a flat plate of sheet metal having tongues passing throughsaid slots and overturned to hold the parts together.
In testimony whereof, I
