Specication of Letters Patent No. 1,429, dated December 14:, 1839.

To all 107mm it may concern.'

Be it known that I, BENIJAH BoswoRTH, of the county of Fayette and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Im-y provement 0n Bedsteads; and I do hereby l declare that the following is an exact description.

The lnature of my invention consists in the mode of tightening the sacking and keeping the bedstead firmly together without the aid of bolts or screws or both.

The posts are made in the usual form except the mortise, instead of which I bore a two inch hole with a bit or auger, where the mortise-is usually made, nearly through the posts for the side rails, and for the end rails till they intersect those for the side rails. I turn all the rails perfectly round from end to end as shown by the drawing, Figures A and B, by the letters A and B, and three inches from the end of each, more or less as may be necessary, turn them down with a perfectly square shoulder, to the size of holes in the posts, so that when put together every part fits square and true. At the bottom of the rails I insert a pin an inch in diameter and projecting two inches near the shoulder of each end of each rail as shown by Figs. D and C, letter D. The pins, eight in number, are turned with a groove at the end.

The sacking bottoni being attached to the I rails by means of tacks or eyelet holes over pins, as shown, F ig. B, letters A and B. The head and foot board put in as usual and the bedstead put together. I then reeve a cord or rope sufficiently strong" around the opp0- site pins, as shown at D, D, Figs. A and B, tying or splicing the ends so as to form an endless rope, Fig. A, letter F, pass a stick or small lever, Fig. A, letter E, between the ropes at or near the center of the rail and by twisting the stick or lever the ropes are shortened, the sacking C, made tight, and the bedstead held firmly together without the expense or aid of bolts or screws. When suficiently tight the end of the lever is made to rest against the bottom of t-he'rails as shown by Fig. A, letters E and E.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The method herein described of tightening the sacking bottom of bedsteads by means of the rope attached to the pins projecting from the under side of the rails and twisted by a stick.
