MAYHAM WILLIAM RHOADES, OF HIGHLANDLNEW YORK.
PORTABLE FENCE.
.Applicationv filed March 9, 1921. Serial No. 451,059.
T0 @ZZ whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, MAYHAM WILLIAM RHoADEs, a citizen of the United States, residin at Highland, in the county of Ulster and tate of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Fences, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in fences in general, and more particularly to the panelled type of the same adapted to be readily portable from one point to another and quickly set up for use.
The primary object of vthe invention, therefore, is to provide for a fence construc-v tion of the character mentioned, and one of an extremely simplified arrangement, wherein the panelled sections of the same are formed to facilitate *the stacking of the same in deep symmetrical piles or tiers, either for storage, or transportation from one point to another and which may be easily and readily set up one panelled sec tion abutting the other in end to end relation and secured together.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention resides in the certain novel and useful construction and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, set forth in the appended claim, and illustrated in the accompanied dra-wings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section, of a preferred form of a fence,
Fig. 2 is a transverse section through one of the panelled sections thereof,
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the rails of the same.
Referring to the drawing, wherein similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts' in the several views thereof. the numeral 10 indicates the end posts of each panelled section which are tapered, or otherwise sharpened, as at 11, at their lower ends, whereby the same may be readily and easily inserted or driven into the ground. Each panelled section comprises a pair of spaced posts 10 provided with a series of vertically spaced recesses, one of such recesses of each post being complemental to the other whereby to receive the opposite ends of a series of horizontally extending rails 12, the ends of the rails 12 being tapered off, as at 13, to assure av snug lit in the recesses complemental thereto and properlg assembled.
*xtending vertically of the rails 12 and medially between the posts 10 of each panel, is a brace strip or bar 14, which has its lower end secured to the bottommost rail, and its intermediate portions eccentrically connected to each of the upper rails, with its upper end projecting above the top rail and terminating in the plane of the top ends of the posts 10, Extending diagonally inwardly and downwardly from the top ends of the posts 10 are a pair of brace straps or bars 15 which are connected or secured to each of the upper rails 12 at their points of crossing, and at their lower ends to the bottom rail 12, as at 16, immediate to eitherl side of the point of connection of the vertical brace strip or bar 14 therewith. The fastenings 16, together with the similar fastenings 16 used for securing the brace strips or bars 14 and 15 to the rails 12, may be simple wooden pins, made from the same wooden material of the posts 10 and the rails 12, or the same may be of any of the usual forms of bolts, screws or nails, as may be desired. v
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed, is z A fence panel comprising end supporting members, said members having their opposed vertical faces formed to provide a plurality of vertically spaced recesses, thek recesses of one of the members being disposed in alinement with the recesses of the other thereof and tapered in opposite directions with respect thereto, horizontally disposed rails extending between said members and having their opposite ends wedged into engagement with the complemental of the recesses thereof, a brace disposed vertically of said rails and medially between said members and separably connected to each rail, and diagonally extending braces con'` necting the top ends of said members and the bottommost of the rails at points directly to either side of the points of connection of the vertical brace therewith, said diagonal braces also connecting the other of said rails at the points of their crossing therewith.'
In testimony whereof, l affix my signature hereto.
MAYHAM WLLIAM RHOADES.
