a citizen of the United States of America,
residing atNewark, Essex County, State of New Jersey, have invented oertain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Toys, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in toys, the object being to provide a selfpropelled combination of a miniature vehicle, an animal-figure and a figure representing a clown, doll, or other figure, all arranged so that the animal and figure Wlll rock while the toy is in motion to give the appearance of a balky animahthe doll figure moving in unison with the movement of the animal figure.
I To produce the result desired, I have arranged a novel combination of parts, all of which will be hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accom panying drawing, wherein Fig. l is a side elevation of a toy embodying my improvement;

As herein embodied, my invention comprises a body member 5, containing a motor mechanism of the usual variety employed to operate a driving disk Thaving teeth 8 through a portion of its periphery, one-half, for instance, as indicated in Fig. 3. The motor mechanism will not be described in detail any more than to state that it includes a spring 9, which is wound up or placed under tension by a key 10, said spring acting through a train of gears 11, 12, 13, and 14: to rotate the disk 7. The teeth of the disk mesh alternately with pinions 16 and 17 on an axle shaft 18 carrying wheels 19 and 20. During the rotation of the disk, the wheels will be rotated alternately in opposite directions, thereby causing the toy to alternately move back ward and forward.
The device further includes a seat 21 pivotally connected to the body 5, said seat having secured thereto a figure 22 representing a clown, for instance. The seat is out of balance, as can be seen, and will rest upon the'peripheral edge of the disk 7. The pivotal points for the seat 21 consist of the turned out ends 23 of a pair of shafts 24 and 25, said ends passing through ears 26 of the body 5 and arms 27 of the seat 21. The shafts intermediate their ends engage the dash-board '28 of the body 5 and drop will tend to maintain the seat in contact with disk '5, the animal figure and doll figure being connected by a wire, or the like, 30. It will be noticed that the pivotal points of the seat 21 are located ahead of the' center of the figure 22. In other words, the weight of the doll figure will be imposed upon the seat somewhat to the rear of the pivotal points of said seat; hence, as the animal figure and seat with its doll figure are out of balance and always te'nding to drop, the seat will be maintained in contact with the periphery of disk 7.
It will be seen in Fig. 3 that the section of disk 7 carrying teeth 8, has a larger radius than the remainder of the disk; hence said section will raise seat 21, or swing it upwardly upon its pivots, during the rotation thereof.v As soon as the section carrying the teeth clears the seat, the said seat will drop or swing down. This swinging or up and down movement of the seat will cause the animal figure toswing upon its pivotal points and in combination with the back and forth movement of the toy will give the appearance of a balky animal. As the pivotal points for the animal figure and seat are located ahead of the center of gravity of their respective parts, and as the doll figure is so positioned as to cause its weight to be imposed upon said seat out of alinement with the pivotal points of said seat, and to the rear thereof, said animal figure, seat and doll will tend to swing downwardly; hence disk 7 functions only to raise the seat, and cause the back end of the animal figure to rise.
