DAVIDHEYMAN,'OE NEWARK, NEW JEnsEY;
MECHANICAL AUTOMOBILE TOY.
Application filed November 14,1925. Serial No. 68,972.
This invention relates to improvements in mechanical automobile toys. The chief objGC-Q of this invention is to provide an inexpensive but effective toy that will simulate a swaying or rocking automobile, or one that is out of control of the operator. The manner in which I carry out my invention will now be described, and the novel f features thereof will be pointed out in the appended specification and claims. In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view in elevation of my invention,
Figure 2 is a fragmental side elevation of certain parts of my invention, shown in operating position,
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 33 of Fig. 1 showing the operating mechainism.
The toy of my invention cons sts of a body 0 portion 5. Hingedly connected to said body portion 5, as at 6, is a cradle or frame 7. At the forward end ofthe cradle 7 there is pivotallymounted at at 8, the forward end or hood portion 9 of my toy automobile, this 5 forward portion has mounted at the front end thereof the front axle and wheels 10, and the rear wheels '11,and axle 12 is mounted at a the rear of the cradle 7.
The front or hood portion 9 has at one 30 side thereof a slotted arn l l, the object of whi ch will presently be described.
The motive power of my automobile toy is supplied by the usual spiral spring 15, one end of-which is secured to a wall 16, of the cradle 7, and the other end being secured to awinding key shaft 17 of square cross section,loosely mounted on said shaft 17 is a gear 18, to one side of said gear 18 1s a shdably mounted pawl 19.011 said shaft ll'; said pawl 19 being held against ratchet teeth punched out of the gear-18, by means of a. spring 21 held 'on the shaft 17, pressing against one face of said pawl 19 and the inner surface of wall 22 of the cradle 7,'said pawl 19 being operative in driving direction only. Forward motion of my toy automobile is imparted by means of gear 18, which is in mesh with a pinion 24 secured to the rear axle 12. Up and down rocking motion to the toy is imparted by means of a pinion 25, secured to a crank shaft 26 having at one end a crank or offset portion 27 fitting into a slot 28 in the arm 14 of the front or hood portion 9, the crank shaft 26 has at its opposite end another offset 29, operating in a slot 80 in the lower part of the body portion;
7 the slot of .From the; foregoing it will readily be seen that when forward motion is imparted to my toy through the medium of: the power-spring and driving gear v18, an. up and down movement is imparted to the body 5of the car bymeans of crank 29, operating inslot 30 in the said body portion 5, and also an up and down rocking or swaying motion will be imparted to the forward or hood portion of the toy by means of crank 2.7 operating in the slot :28v toraiseand lower arm let about its pivot 8 and thus cause an up and down oscillating movement to the hood .portionof my toy. A sidewise. or swaying motion is .oifecteddue to the body of the car being pivvoted at 66 and is therefore free. to sway sidewise when thebody of thecar is being swayed up and down bythec'rank 29. Inside of the carand mounted upon a spring 32, fiXed to a seat 33, is a figure of a chauffeur 34.. It will be readilywseen that when the toy isinmotion the said figure of a chauffeur will sway from side to. side and will simulate fear and lackof control ofthe machine.
., ltwill also lie-readily seenby referring to 1 18,1252 and 3 of, the drawings that the main drivinggear '18 is loosely mounted onthe shaft 17 and sald gear is only actuated for advancing. rotary movement, on the unwinding ofthe spring 15, by means of the pawl 19, acting against ratchet teeth ,20'of said gear 18. This arrangement, permits of the use ofa single gear and the pinion 24 mountedon axle 12 toproduce movement of the toyin proper forward direction,
Having. described my invention, what I 1.111 a toy ofthe nature d g a \vardly disposedhood portion, a body portion pivotally'. associated with the hood por-q t1on,qan arm on said hood. portion having a slot therein and'means operating within said arm' to oscillate the hood in an up and down direction. f m
