Description

H. J. STUBBS.
ThiIi-Goupling Attachments No,142,960 PatentedSeptember16,1873.
; NITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
HARRY J. STUBBS, OF KENNETT SQUARE, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN THl LL-COUPLING ATTACHMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,960, dated September 16,1873; application filed August 21, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY J. STUBBS, of Kennett Square, Chester county, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Attachment for ThilLOouplings, of which the following is a specification: y
The object of my invention is to retain the pins of thillcouplings in position, and to enable the same to be readily removed and replaced when necessary, and this object I accomplish by the use, in connection with an ordinary thill-couplin g, of the attachment illustrated in the perspective views, Figures 1 and 2, of the accompanying drawing, which consistssimply of a case or bracket, A, and arm B, the latter being retained in a position directly over the head of the coupling-pin D by a spring, a, wound upon the spindle b, to which the said arm is connected.
The spring a tends to turn the arm in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 1, but this tendency is resisted by a projection, d, at the inner end of the arm which bears against the case or axle, and thus acts as a stop to retain the said arm in a position opposite the pin.
By simply raising the retaining-arm, by
pin,the arm, when released, will again resume its position over the head of the same and prevent its accidental withdrawal.
The case or bracket A is securedto the axle independently of the clip, and this is the special feature of the invention, the said case and its spring-arm forming a complete attachment, adapted to any ordinary thill-eoupling, without requiring any alteration of the latter.
I claim as my invention The case A, carrying an arm, 13, and operating spring a, and adapted to be secured to an axle adjacent to athill-coupling, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HARRY J. STUBBS.
