Description

H. D. BABCOCK.
PLATE TIGHTENING DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 18, 1919.
1 AQKSQS, PatentedSept. 5 1922 gww/wtom Patented fiept.
HARRY D. BABGOCK, OF TACOMA, WASHINGTON.
PLATE-TIGHTENING DEVICE.
Application filed September 18, 1919. Serial No. 324,691.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY D. BABoooK, a
citizen of the United States, and resident of Tacoma, county of Pierce. State of VVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plate-Tightening Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in plate-tightening devices and more particularly to plate-tightening devices employed in ship building construction. The object of this improvement is to provide a device that is simple in its construction and can be manually actuated to clamp the ship-plates together preparatory to being permanently riveted together.
A further object of this improvement re sides in the applicability of clamping shipplates together by applying the device from one side thereof only thereby'eliminating the assistance of a helper from the opposite side. I
The invention consists in the novel arrangement, construction and combination of parts, as will be more fully described in the following specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and finally pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation of the device showing it applied to separated plates preparatory to clamping them together.
Fig. 2 is a view of the same after the plates have been clamped together and Fig. 3 is an end view showing the device applied to the ship-plates in the relative position as illustrated in Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings wherein like reference numerals indicate like parts in all of the figures, the numeral 4 indicates an eccentric bar having an elongated handle member 5. Pivotally attached to this eccentric bar off-center is a pin 6, the lower end thereof being of increased diameter on one side forming a V-shaped notch 7.
To clamp the ship-plates 8 and 9 together which are herein shown for the purpose of illustrating the function, the pin 6 is inserted through the holes 11 and 12 of the respectlve plates and a wedge 13 is inserted in the hole 12 from the same side of the plate as the device is applied; in this manner, the pin is urged against the wall of the hole whereupon as the handle member 5 is lifted the eccentric action will bring the V- shaped notch 7 in contact with the peripheral surface of the opposite plate 9 and hence preclude the passage of the pin through the hole 11 thereof. By the application of further pressure on the handle member 5 the eccentric action of the bar 4 will urge the two plates 8 and 9 together as shown in Fig. 2 where they can be bolted or riveted together as desired. The device can then be easily removed from the plates by knocking out the Wedge member 13 which loosens the pin and permits the lower end thereof to become disengaged so that it can be lifted out of the holes.
It is obvious that a device of this character is capable of applying great power by manual application and can be easily applied without the assistance of a helper on the opposite side of the objects which are being clamped together. It is further obvious that the speed at which this device can be manipulated, highly recommends such to the ship building industry.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
A device for drawing plates together com prising a pin having a one-sided head adapted to be passed through the holes in the plates, a Wedge adapted .-to be inserted alongside of the stem of said pin, and a lever provided with a rounded end adapted to engage one of the plates, said pin being pivoted to said lever eccentrically of thecurve of'the head.
Signed at Tacoma, Washington, this 4th dayof September, 1919.
