Description

G. L. CHRISTMAN.
KNIFE BLADE SWITCH APPLICATION FILEQ JAN. 30. 1920.
1,497, 5 Patented Aug. 29, 1922.
INVENTOR AT'ToRNEY iii ilil GEORGE L. GHRISTIVIAN, OF SW'ISSVALE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNQR TO WESTING- nonsn nnnctrnic a SYLVANIA.
To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, GEORGE L. CI-IRIs'rMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Swissvale, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in -Knife-.
a device of the above indicated character that shall be extremely simple in construc tion, effective in operation and economical to manufacture. 7
Anothe object of my invention is to provide apositioning or stop member thatshall be adapted for ready mounting on a knifeblade switch of usual formwithout any alteration in the switch. Y
Heretofore, it has been usual to provide stop members or devices to limit the movement of the blade members of knife-blade switches, certain of which have comprised relatively-complicated and expensive structures while others have required some, even if slight, special machining of the switch parts.
In practicing my invention, I provide an extremely simple and inexpensive member that may be readily mounted on any of a usual standard form of knife-blade switches without eventhe slightest alteration in the.
switch.
In the accompanylng drawlngs, Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a knife-blade switch and a stop member embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a partial front elevational view thereof; Fig. 3 is a View,
simila to a portion of Fig. 1 of a modified form of switch embodying my invention;
Fig. 4 is a view, similar to Fig. 2, of the mannrnorunme COMPANY, A CORPORATION or rnnn- KNIFE-BLADE SWITCH. I
Specification of Letters Eatent. -Pa1 enfed Aug, 29, I ApIJIicatiOnfiIedJ'anuary so, 1920. Serial No. 355,047. I
' 8 secure the switch'to J any suitable support,
such as a switchboard panel 9,
Apositioning or stop member 10, preferably constructed of a single piece otfrelatively-thin sheet I metal, has apertured side portions 11, closely embracing the jaw memher 4 and the pivot pin 5, and a flat trans I verse mid-portion 12 to arrest the blade member 2 at a position of the latter indicated by broken lines'in Fig. 1. I Punched portions 13, in the sideportionsll, are bent inwardly and around outerstraight edges 14 of the terminal member 4in relatively flat abutting engagementjtherewith and, by extending on either side of a central ho izontal axis through the member 5, rigidly hold the positioning member 10 in the position shown. 7 A
'When it isdesired to mount the positioningmember 10 on any standard switch, of substantially the type shown, the pin 5', the washers 15 and the nuts :16, that normally are parts of the switch, are removed and the member 10 is placed'over the end of themember 4, after'jwhich the member '5, the washers 15 and the nuts 16 are replaced.
In the modification of my device illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4,-amember 17, preferably of strap metal, embraces the pin 5 on one side of the terminal member 4'and is provided with punched portions 13, similar to the portion 13 of the device of Figsl and 2, that engage the forward edge 14 of the tion 19 of the member 17 and has a portion 20 projecting intothe path of the blade I member 2.
As illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6, the modification of my device comprises a member 21 of relatively-thin sheet metal bent to substantially U-shape having side portions 22 embracing. the terminal member 4 and the pin 5 and transverse under portions 23 and 24 for receiving the blade member 2 and to Y engage the under sideof the member 4 for preventing the turning of the member 21, respectively. I
Not even the slightest alteration in the switch parts is required in any of the forms of my invention, and the device'is simple and economical in construction, effective in operation and very easyto install.
, While I have shown and described particular forms of my invention, changes may be effected therein without departing from the spirit and scope thereof, as set for h in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a knife-blade switch, the combina- I tion with a knife-blade member and a pivot terminal member therefor, of means for holding the blade member in a predetermined position comprising a member constituted to be added to, Without any alteration in, the switch.
2. A switch comprising co-operating members initially formed for a certain amount of unrestricted relative movement and means for holding one of said members in a predetermined position within the limits ofsaid movement, said means being constructed for co-operative positioning on the switch without any alteration in the initial form of the switch.
3. In a knifeblade switch, the combination with a lmifeblademember and a pivot terminal member therefor, of a member secured to said terminal member and having.
a stirrup portion extending across the path of the blade member to position the latter.
4.'In a knife-blade switch, the combination with a knife-blade member and a pivot terminal member therefor, of a positioning member embracing the terminal member and having a portion adapted 'to' positively engage the blade member.
5. In a knife-blade switch, the combination with a knife-blade member and a pivot terminal member therefor, of a positioning member for the blade member embracing,
and having-a holding portion hooked over the outer perimeter of, the terminal mem- 6. In a knife-blade switch, the combination with a knife-blade member, pivot terminal member therefor and a pivot pin, of a positioning device for the blade member comprising a member .co-operating with the pin having a holding portion crimped over-the perimeter of the terminal member.
7. In a knifeblade switch, the combination with a knife-blade member, a pivot terminal jaw member therefor and a pivot pin, of a positioning member for the blade member embracing the jaws ofthe terminal member and mounted on ithe pin.
8. In aknifeblade switch, the combina tion with a knife-blademember, a pivot terminal jaw member-therefor and a pivot pin, of a positioning member for the blade member embracing the jaws of the terminal member and mounted on the pin, said positioning member having an indented portion to prevent movement of the same with respectto the terminal member and a portion' co-operating with the blade member to position the latter.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this 27th day of January 1920. I
