UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID H. NATION, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN RESERVOIR COOKlNG-STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,717, dated September 9, 1873; application filed April 3,1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID B. NATION, of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cover for Reservoir of Cooking-Stove; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a reservoir or boiler-cover and frame, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my reservoircover and frame. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through line 00 m, Fig. 1 5 and Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the cover and frame through the line y y, Fig. 1.
A represents a cast-metal frame for the top of a reservoir or boiler for cooking-stoves. When made for areservoir through which the exit-flue passes, it is provided with a suitable orifice either at its front or back for the passage of the same, and the connection of the smoke-pipe. This frame is usually made rectangular in form, and near each end of the same is cast a'vertically-extending flange, d, formed L-shaped, as shown. Cast upon the back or front of this frame are two upwardlyextending studs, a a, which are placed on each side of the exit-flue, or near the longitudinal These studs are each made circular, and have each an outward-extending wing, b, at their upper parts. B B represent the two covers, which are used upon the frame. These covers are each formed with a. downward-projecting flange to correspond with the L-shaped flanges d on the frame A, and have each a slot on their rear or front inner edges to correspond with the shape of the studs and wings a b. These covers are made so as to perfectly fit the frame A, and are so placed that the slots therein will pass over the studs and wings, and can be swung outward either way therefrom. By thus connecting the covers, no screws or rivets are required, and they can be detached from the frame at will.
Should a cover become broken or expanded by heat so as to not fit the frame, it can be readily detached and a new one replaced instead.
The object of the flanges on the frame and on the under part of the covers is to prevent the passage of water and steam upon the top of the frame, and obviate the overflow of water and condensed steam on the stove-top and floor of the premises.
I do not, broadly, claim the employment of two hinged covers for a reservoir for cookingstoves. Nor, do I claim, specifically, the peculiar hinge, as shown and described, as I am aware that such is not of itself new.
What I claim is- The combination of the frame A with L- shaped flanges d d, and studs a a with wings b b, and the detachable covers B B with slots and under flanges corresponding with the studs and flanges on the plate, all as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 15th day of March, 1873.
DAVID H. NATION.
