Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,692, dated September 9, 18723 application filed September 2, 1873.

To all whom yit may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES W. GREEN, of Pontiac, in the county of Oakland and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Boots and Shoes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of the quarters of a shoe embracing my improvements. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the line x .fr of Fig. l.

My invention relates to the production of shoes of that class which are laced in front, and it consists in so cutting the leather forming the upper as thata portion of' the quarte-rs extend, on the one side, from the front of the shoe around the heel, where itis crimped, to a point about the middle 'of the quarter on the opposite `'de, where it is joined to a piece which also extends from the front, as will be hereinafter described.

In the accompanying drawing, A represents a part of the quarters of the shoe, Which eX- tends from the front around the heel, where it is crimped, to a point, c. B represents the remaining portion of the quarters, also extending from the front, and joined, at a, to the part B by a straight vertical seam about the middle of the side ofthe quarter.

It will be seen that, by thus cutting` and crimping the portions forming the shoe-upper, much less material is required, While the part B can be taken from leather which would otherwise be rendered valueless by cutting in the ordinary way. At the same time the crimping gives, in connection With the cut herein described, the required shape to the shoe, which is a savin g oi' labor in the production of articles of this class.

Having described my invention, I claim- The quarters formed as described, the part A forming a seamless quarter and back, and extending` to the front on one side, and the part B attached to the quarter A by a straight vertical seam, as shown, and joining the front on the opposite or inner side, as speciiied.
