IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTONS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,686,y dated September 9, 1873; application filed Y November 11, 1872.

To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH DURAND, re-

cently of Paris, France, now residing in the ing a recess, into which the head ofthe round shank is received, in combination with such shank having a neck, and a plate with a slot that is enlarged at one end for the head of the shank to be passed through. Thereby the plate and the shank will be connected by slipping the shank along in the slot so that its head will be received into the recess in the spring. The reverse movement will separate the parts, the head in its movement pressing back the spring.

In the drawing, Figure 1 is an elevation of the said button applied to the plate of a cravat. Fig. 2 is a section, showing the spring and its recess. These partsare in larger size than usual, for greater clearness; and Fig. 3 is a section ,of the button and head in a form adapted to shirt-studs, &c.

The button-head a is of any desired character. The shank b is made with a collar at 2, to retain the shank in the button-hole when the use to which it is to be put. In the plate d is an elongated opening, that is large enough at one end for the head 4 to pass through freely, and the other end of the slot is of a size to grasp the neck 3 as it is slipped along therein. The springt' is attached to the plate d, and has a recess adapted to receive the head 4 of the shank b, when said shank is slippedto the narrow end of the slot. Thereby the shank will be retained in position by the ridge or projection 6, upon the spring, and when the shank is to be disconnected from the plated, lsaid shank is moved along in the slot with rsufficient force to cause the head 4 to press/back the spring t' as the head passes over the incline 6.

slotted for passing such head 4 and securing the shank, as set forth.
