HENRY S. BREWINGTON, 0F BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
PAPER CONTAINER.
Application filed May 23,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY S. BREWING- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore city, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Containers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to receptacles which are made of paper, pasteboard and analogous material, and its object is to provide a novel and improved means for uniting the ends to the main body portion of the receptacle, whereby separation of said parts is effectually prevented and a tight joint there between is produced.
The object stated is attained by means of a combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, and in order that the same may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a central vertical section of the receptacle, and Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof.
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes the main body portion of the receptacle, the same being cylindrical. The receptacle is closed at the bottom by a head 6 in the shape of a disk, and the top of the receptacle is provided with a lid or cap which is removable and composed of a cylindrical side portion 7 and a head 8, it being understood that said side portion seats snugly over the outside of the body portion 5.
At its bottom, the body portion 5 has an inward bend 9 which is carried upwardly for a short distance to produce an internal annular shoulder 10 in the body portion, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The bottom disk 6 seats on and is supported by this shoulder.
The marginal portion of the bottom disk 6 is stepped as shown in Fig. 1 to produce a short cylindrical portion 11 having a continuous annular outstanding flange 12 at the top. The cylindrical portion 11 fits snugly inside the bend 9, and the flange 12 seats on top of the shoulder 10 produced bysaid bend, the edge of the flange being in close Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 8, 11922.
1921. Serial No. 471,582;
and intimate contact with the interior surface of the body portion 5 of the receptacle above the shoulder. It will therefore be seen that the joint between the disk 6 and the receptacle body 5 is sealed in three places, namely, between the parts 11 and 9, the shoulder 10 and the flange 12, and the edge of the flange and the interior surface of the body, with the result that a tight joint is assured. The parts are pressed together by a rolling or other suitable process.
The parts 7 and 8 are united in the same manner as the parts 5 and 6, and upon applying the lid to the receptacle, the flange 13 corresponding to the flange 12 seats on the top edge of the body portion 5 of the receptacle, as shown in Fig. 2.
A receptacle constructed as hereinbefore described is strong and durable, and it can beeasily and cheaply manufactured. All the parts which enter into the structure are composed of paper, paste-board or analogous material.
I claim:
1. A paper receptacle comprising a cylindrical body portion having its wall bent inwardly at one end to form an internal shoulder, and a closure for said end comprising a counter-sunk disk having its peripheral portion stepped to seat on the shoulder, and also to contact with the interior surface of the body above the shoulder.
2. A paper receptacle comprising a cylindrical body portion having an internal shoulder at one end, and a closure for said end comprising a counter-sunk disk having its peripheral portion seated on the shoulder and in contact with the interior surface of the body above the shoulder.
3. A paper receptacle comprising a cylindrical body portion'having an internal shoulder at one end, and a closure for said end comprising a counter-sunk disk having its peripheral portion seated on and in close intimate contact with the shoulder and the interior surface of the body above the shoulder.
In testimon whereof I affix my signature.
HFNRY S. BREWINGTON.
