CONCRETE SLAB FOB VIALLS OB THE LIKE.

' Application filed July 15,
To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRAnois (ii'ASCOIGNE LYNDE subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of The Eaves, Picardy Hill, Belvedcre Kent, England have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to Concrete Slabs for Wells or the like, of which the following is specification.
This invention relates to concrete slabs for use in the erection of walls or the like and consists of an improvement in or modification of the invention described and claimed in the specification of application for Letters Patent No. 311,0d9.
' In my aforesaid specification certain means are described for effecting the verti cal junctions of reinforced concrete slabs but it is found that when concrete slabs are formed with metallic connectors projecting from the edges thereof the said connectors are liable to deterioration owing to atmospheric influences during the storage of the slabs thus rendering difficult the joining of such slabs when required for use in erecting a wall or other structure.
Now it is the chief object of the present invention to render the reinforced concrete slabs capable of being stored without risk of the attendant deterioration above referred to and to facilitatethe connecting of such slabs when used in the erection of walls and other structures and to these ends and such others as may hereinafter appear or are incidental thereto the invention may be said to reside in a construction in which the slab is produced of the required dimensions by moulding or otherwise with the reinforcement embedded therein and provided with transverse holes or passages for the reception of connecting wires the said holes or openings being made in the concrete and through the meshing of the reinforcement. The holes or openings may be drilled after the slabs have been moulded and dried or matured or they may be roduced by moulding at the same time that the slabs are moulded.
When the slabs are placed in position in the course of erecting a structure such as a wall the wires are threaded or passed through the holes and the ends which project on opposite sides of the slabs twisted or tied together. The joint is then covered with concrete and allowed to set or harden.
In order to obtain a smooth or plain surface joint there may be formed in the faces Epec-ifica'izion Letters Patent. Pgatnntgfi A s 8, 11%?22,

of the slab chases or grooves extending from or slightly beyond the holes or openings to the edges of the slabs. Thus when the aforesaid wires are inserted or passed in or through the holes they will, lie for a por" tion of their length in the chases or grooves and the knots or twists will lie between the slabs so that no part of the wires project beyond the faces of the slabs. By these means a neat and very sightly joint is effected. The chases or grooves at their open ends may be splayed and deepened somewhat to receive the twist of wire.
In order that the invention may be readily understood and carried into effect I will now proceed to describe the same more fully with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a fragmentary view showing in side elevation portionsof two slabs at their vertical junction and embodying the features of the present improvements.
Figure 2 is a corresponding horizontal section.
Fig. 3 is a view of a portion of the face of a slab showing a groove for the connecting wires. and
Fig. 4C is a sectional elevation of a portion of a slab on line IV-JV.
The slab a is produced by. moulding or other suitable method the concrete covering and enclosing the metal reinforcement 0. which is completely embedded therein. This reinforcement is preferably of a meshed construction usually the well known. expanded metal wire netting or the like. The slabs are formed or provided either at the time of moulding or afterwards when the concrete has hardened or matured with transverse holes or openings 6 for the reception of wires 0 whereby the slabs are connected at the vertical junctions. These holes are made through the slabs so as to traverse the meshes of the reinforcement. Thus when the said wires are passed through the holes Y) and their ends twisted or knotted together as at c the strain on the connecting wires is distributed by the matured concrete of the slab over a large portion of the reinforcement. The exposed portions of the said connecting wires are covered or encased in concrete as shown at (Z (Figure 2) the concrete being run into the space between the edges of the slab as shown at 65 The said twisted or knotted ends of the wires may be housed in chases or grooves 6 crete.
(Figure 2) formed in the faces of the slabs a the said chases extending from or slightly beyond the holes bto'the adjacent junction edges of the slabs. When the ends of the Wires 0 are twisted as'at 0 and 'laid inthe chases or grooves a flush face joint is se cured the interstices being filled With congrooves as at 6 (Figure 2) provision may be made for receiving the knot or twist 01 Wire Within the plane. of the slab. I
The .herein described improvements enablereinforced concrete slabs to be produced Which, When joined by means of the .connecting Wires ensures a very strong and durable joint. The method of construction and joining also offers greatfacility for storing as the destruction or weakening by oxidation of the metallic connectors Whether the same are constituted as heretofore by sepa-v By splaying and deepening the grooves in the faces of the slabs to receive the Wires, and depressions in the adjacent ends of :the grooves i'n aoljacent slabs to house the knotted or twisted ends of the Wires. i e I c The combination of concrete slabs having metallic reinforcement embedded"therein, transverse passages Which traverse the concrete and the reinforcement, connecting Wires in said passages .the ends of Which are twisted or knotted together, groovesiin the facesof the slabs to receive the Wires, and depressions in the adjacent .endsof the grooves in adjacent slabs to house the knotted or twisted endsof the Wires, .anda covering of concrete for said Wires. v
Concrete slabs having :Inetallic vreinforcement [embedded therein, transverse passages Which traverse the concrete and the reinforcement connecting Wires in .sa'id passages the ends of which the twisted .or.
