Description

S. PRIEST, JR.- WALL TIE. APPLICATION FILED JAN.12, 1806.
Patented Nov. 3, 1908.
STEPHEN PRIEST, JR,
OF WEST DEVONPORT, TASMANIA, AUSTRALIA.
WALL-TIE.
Application filed January 12, 1906.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN. PRIEST, J12, subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at \Nest Devonport, in nia, Commonwealth of Australia, have invented a new and useful 1m roved all-Tie or Means for Holding To etiier the Two Divisions of Cavity Brick alls; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descri tion of the same. 1
My invention has been devised in order to rovide a tie for hollow walls, which will not only tie both divisions of the hollow wall so curely together, but will also strengthen each I division longitudinally.
My tie consists of two or more longitudinal wires which are connected together by two wires (hereinafter called the transverse wires) one of each of these being twisted around each longitudinal wire for a certain distance, and both being then carried across the space intervening between the longitudinal wires, so that they cross one another at an angle about midway between said lon 'itudinul wires. The transverse wire twister around the right hand longitudinal wire is then twisted for a certain distance, and carried across again to the right hand longitudinal wire. The other transverse wire twisted around the left hand longitudinal wire, is carried across and twisted around the right hand longitudinal wire, the operation being repeated until a tie of pr determined length is completed. At a porn 1, where the transverse wires cross one another between the longitudinal wires,
they are twisted together to increase the strength of the tie.
lhe drawing shows a plan of a portion of a tie constructed according to my invention, showing the transverse wires twisted together where they cross the cavity in the wall.
1 is the hollow wall.
2 and 3 are the longitudinal wires which run parallel with each other.
a wires 2 and 3 respectively i l i i round the left hand longitudinal wire i l i i Patented Nov. 3, 1908.
Serial No. 295,804.
4 and 5 are twisted round the longitudinal for any suitable distance, and then the transverse wife 4 is the State of Tasma-i taken across to the longitudinal wire 3, and
transverse wire 5 is taken across to the longitudinal wire 2. Said wires 4 and 5 are twisted round wires 2 and 3 for the required distance, and then passed back to the wires 2 and 3 respectivel The transverse wires 4 and 5 are passed ackwards and forwards in this manner until a tie of a predetermined length is made. The said transverse wires 4 and 5 are twisted together where they cross each other between the longitudinal wires 2 and 3 as shown at 6 in Fi .1.
In erecting a hollow wall, my tie is cut to the length required and may be laid in the mortar upon every fourth or sixth course of bricks, so that the loo itudinal wires 2 and 3 run from end to end a on the center of each division of the hollow wal 1.
Having now fully described and ascertained the nature of my said invention, and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is In combination with a hollow wall, a tie comprising longitudinal wires 2 and 3, and wires 4 and 5 twisted respectively around said longitudinal wires for a certain distance, both being then twisted together and carried across the intervening space between said longitudinal wires when each is twisted longitudinal wire, said wires 4 and 5 coming together within the wall so as to form triangular spaces between themselves and the longitudinal wire in which the material of the wall enters.
vln testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
