DYNAMOMETER.
Application filed May 20,
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE M. EASON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moline, in the county of Rock Island and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dynamometers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a dynamometer for use in recording a draw bar pull in a tractor or the like; and the object of the invention is to provide a simple and at the same time rugged piece of mechanism which will be well adapted to withstand the heavy strains imposed upon it during a test.
The invention consists essentially in the provision of a pair of co-operating compression heads which bear upon a rubber capsule containing oil or other fluid, which is thus subjected to variable pressure, depending upon the measure of the draw bar pull.
Further objects will appear from a detailed description of' the invention, which consists in the features of construction an combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings: T
Figure 1 is a side elevation of'the dynamometer;
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same; and
Fig. 3 is an end view of the same.
The dynamometer comprises a pair of connecting eyes or loops 10 and 11, one of which is intended to connect with the draw bar of a tractor, and the other with the draft connection of a plow or the like. The eye connection 10 is centrally secured to a proximate cross head 12 and a distant cross head 13, through the ends of which cross heads are give to the structure a rectangular formation. The eye connection 11 is likewise secured to a proximate cross head 15 and a distant cross head 16 through the medium of spacing bolts 17.
The two members thus described constitute in effect interlocked nelatively movable frames, each adapted to impart a thrust in the direction of pull of the respective eye connections. In order to prevent displacement of the members in other than a longitudinal direction, each of the eyeconnections is formed to provide ashank 18 which enters a socket 19 inthe adjacent cross head of the Specification of Letters Patent.

opposing companion member.. The cross head 13 bears against the end face of a compression head 20, which is provided with a longitudinal center bore 21 closed at the outer end by a countersunk packing disk 22 to ,prevent the escape of fluid, and the compression head is provided in its acting face with a circular recess 23 within which is located a rubber capsule 24: adapted to contain oil or other fluid. The opposite side of the capsule is subject to the pressure of a compression disk 25 which coacts with and complements the action of the compression hea 20, being of a size to enter the mouth of the recess 23 within which which the rubber capsule is located.
The capsule is provided at the center of its inner face with a metallic nipple 26, which is flared at its inner side to bear against the marginal rubber surface of the capsule, which serves to clamp the rubber between the flared end of the nipple and the adjacent (1 metal of the orifice 27, which latter is provide abearshouldered at the point 28 to ing for contact of a'pair of nuts 29 on the tip end of the'nipple, so that as the nuts are screwed down they will draw the flared inner end of the nipple into clamping engagement with the rubber of the capsule, thereby effecting a pressure tight joint of a nature to relieve the rubber from the disruptive effects of compressive action.
The nipple is provided through its center with a port 30 whichcommunicates with the center orifice 21, and the latter has extending laterally therefrom a discharge port 31 which connects with a flexible hose or tube 32 through the medium of a coupling 33. The port 31 may be closed by the manipulation of a needle valve 34 extending into axial alignment with the port 31 through the op posite side of the compression'head.
. In use the flexible tube 32 is connected with a suitable recording instrument responsive to variations in pressure, and the draw bar connections 10 and 11 are connected with the tractor or other implement under test lot - fect, owing to the fact that the rubber capsule is adequately supported on all sides by the surrounding metallic walls. The pres sure imposed upon the liquid Will be transmitted through the tube 32 to the recording instrument, which serves to indicate a record of the same. The invention is extremely simple and rugged in construction and compact in structure, and at the same time is so built that most of the parts are interchangeable, which is an advantage from a manufacturing .standpoint.
I claim:
