INVENTO WZOM W 47;,
' ATTORNEY.
SARAH MAY KITSON, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HAIR FASTENER.
Application filed February 11, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SARAi-I'MAY KirsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hair Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
It is the purpose of my invention to provide an adjustable fastener for the hair by means of which the hair may be secured in a compact bunch so that it may be thereafter easily handled and made up into any fanciful arrangement and secured as an ornamental decoration of the head.
Briefly stated, my invention consists in an adjustable fastener having a band of flexible material for embracing the hair and provided with a device by means of which the band may be lengthened or shortened, one end of the band being provided with a hook adapted to engage the hair, a portion of said hook forming one member of an interlocking device, and the other end of the band being provided with the other member of the interlocking device, these two members interlocking and thus securing together the two ends of the band. The longitudinal adjustment of the band has been found to be very desirable inasmuch as the amount of hair embraced by the fastener varies with the individual.
For an illustration of the preferred construction and various modifications of this fastener, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing in which;
Figure l is a side elevation. Figure 2 shows a plan view. Figure 3 is a sectional View of a bunched roll of hair having this improved fastener applied thereto and holding the same in compact form. Figure at is a modification showing a combined tab and one portion of the interlocking device. Figure 5 shows a modification of Figure 2. employing a combined tab and one portion of the interlocking device. Figure 6 shows the device of Figure 5 in position securing a bunched roll of hair. Figure 6' shows a modification of the device shown in Figures 5 and 6.
The fastener consists of a narrow band a, preferably elastic, having a hook I; attached to one of its ends, said hook having a second hook 0 punched or stamped therefrom or moulded thereon to form one member for securing theretd the opposite end of the band. The other end of the band a is looped.

through ring (Z and secured to adjuster 6 through which the band a is threaded.
Hook Z) is also provided with a slot or other suitable means for securing the end of band a and may be of any suitable material such as, for example, metal or celluloid, and may, as also may the band a, be colored to match the hair upon which it is worn. The ring d is provided to facilitate interlocking with hook a and may be of similar material and coloring to that of hook Z) and, for convenience of manipulation, may be provided with a tab This tab, however, is not necessary when the modification shown in Fig. 4: is used. Adjuster 6 may be punched or moulded and of similar material and coloring as hook .7).
A modification'combining ring a? and tab f is shown in Figure t, this tab f may be punched or moulded from similar material to that of adjuster 6. One end of tab f is provided with a portion which may be taken between the fingers for ease of'manipulation when engaging its eye with hook 0, while the opposite end is slotted to receive band a. The complete device embodying the tab f is shown in Figure 5. In Figure 6 this device is shown in position securing a bunched roll of hair. In order to prevent unsightly projection of the tab 7 and render the device more compact and desirable this tab may be bent as shown in Figure 6. The bending of one end of this tab also aids in manipulation of same when taken between the fingers when engaging or disengaging its eye (Z with book 0.
I claim:
A fastener for the hair comprising a band, a hair engaging hook at one end of said band having a struck up portion forming a second hook, a rigid tab on the other end of said band having an eye for engagment with said second hook for securing together the two ends of the band, said tab being provided with a traverse slot for engaging said band and permitting longitudinal motion thereof and having a longitudinal projection adapted to be engaged by the fingers to facilitate engagement of said eye and said second hook, and means in addition to the elasticity of said band for adjustment of its length.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature this 10th day of F eb-- ruary, 1921. v,
SARAH MAY KITSON.
