UNITED vsiufrns PATENT OFFICE.
ELECTRIC oUnLEn.
Specification of Letters E'atent.
yPatented Aug. 1, 1922.
Application filed March 16, 1920. Serial No. 366,242.
To all fwzom 'it may concern.'
.Be it known that I, ll/IARY GREEN Yeas-nn, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Curlers, oi' which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in electric curlers and has tor its object to provide an apparatus for waving natural hair on the head, and has as its particular object to produce what is known as the Marcel wave.
In the drawings- Fig. 1 is a longitudinal vertical view in mid-section of a curler embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the saine.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view oi the same, taken on the line of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a similar view taken on the line -1-4 of Fig. 2.
The curler comprises a handle 5 havingI a plate 6 which serves as a rest 'for the curler. T hrough the handle 5 the tubular sleeve i extends into the base 8 of the errule '9. ri`he shell 10, of heat-conducting material is detachably mounted in the fel-rule 9 by means of set-screws 11. The inner shell 12 is seated in the shell 10, and contains the heating element 13, to which electric current is conveyed by the wires 1L1-1Lll extending through the tubular sleeve 7 as shown in Fig. 1. f
A heat non-conducting basey 15 is secured to the sleeve 12 by means of the cla-mp 16 (see Fig. 3), the clamp 16 being secured to the sleeve 12 by means of the set screw 17 (see Fig. `1).
The sleeve 12 is provided with a series of prongs 18 which are arranged as shown in two straight lines, the prongs 18 in reach line being equi-distant from each other, and
those in one line being in staggered relation to those in the opposing line, their arrangement and disposition being illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. The prongs 18 are of a heat conducting material and terminate in the globulan closures 19, whose screw threaded extensions 20 are seated in the open mouths of the prongs 18, said prongs 18 being tubular ,and screw-threaded to receive said extensions 20. The caps 19 are of heat f non-conducting material.
The tool thus described is used to wave the hair upon the head, and the base 15 rests upon the scalp of the person whose hair is being curled, when the portion of the hair near the scalp 1s being treated. In the treatment or' long hair at points more remote from the scalp the curler rests upon any suitable support, being held against rotation by the square lower face of the base 15 and the straight edge of the plate 6. The effect known as the Marcel wave is produced by winding the hair alternately around the prongs 18 comprised in the two series above described and illustrated; the prongs 18 being heated as well as the sleeve 12, the heat so administered serves to impart the desired Marcel wave effect. l
The construction described may be varied in detail without departing from the spirit of my invention, whose `primary object is to provide the electrical sleeve 12 with the heated prongs 18, said prongs being alternately disposed .in the arrangement which I have described. More than two lines or series of the prongs 18 may be employed if desired; the two lines illustrated being used as the preferred form of my invention, with a view to lightness and compactness.
.risshown in F ig. 3 the two lines of prongs 18 are mounted tangentially with. reference to each other.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to have secured to me by the grant of Letters Patent. is-
is a new article of manufacture, an electric curler comprising a heat non-conducting base; a shell of heat-conducting material; a clamp securing said shell to said base: a heating element seated in said shell; a terrule wherein said shell is detachablv mounted; a handle; a tubular sleeve extending through said handle and into said ferrule; and a plate secured to said handle and arranged to hold the curler against rotation.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix my signature. 1
` MARY GREILT YEAGER.
