ELECTRIC HAIR-SINGER.

To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that I, JOSEPH P. McMAHoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, \Vhitestone, borough of Queens, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Electric Hair-Singer, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates to hair singers using an electrically heated wire as the singeing medium.

The object of the invention is to provide a newv and improved hair singer arranged to insure a quick and effective singeing of the hair. 7 i Another object is to provide a hair singer which is exceedingly simple and durable in construction and arranged to prevent short circuiting through the medium of the hair or scalp.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a partof this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved electric hair singer with parts shown broken out;

Fig. 3 is a rear end elevation of the same.

The frame 10 is made of hard rubber, indurated fiber or other suitable insulating material, and is in the form of a fork havinga handle 11 adapted to be taken hold of by the user for manipulating the hair singer as hereinafter more fully explained. The frame 10 with its handle 11 is preferably made in two parts fastened together by screws or other suitable fastening means, and the handle 11 is provided with a central opening 12 for the passage of a cord 15 containing

16 and 17 separating at, the inner ends of the opening 12 and extending in opposite directions in an opening 18 formed in the fork of the frame 10, as plainly shown in Fig. 1. The bare ends of the

ing a terminal at the corresponding end of the fork member of the frame 10. Each sectional terminal is preferably made of bars and is fastened in place by additional screws 22 extending through the fork members of the frame 10. A core 25 of lava or other suitable insulating material extends between the outer ends of the fork members of the frame 10, and the ends of this core 25 are flattened and clamped between the cor-. responding pairs of plates 21 forming the terminals. On the core 25 is spirally coiled a singeing wire 26 of nichrome or other similar material having a high electric resistance, the ends of the wire being clamped between the plates 21 of the terminals. 16 and 17 and the ends of the wire to heat the latter to incandescence whenever the cord 15 is connected with a source of electrical energy, which may be by the use of a plug on the end of the cord 15 engaging a socket connected with an electric circuit.

It will be noticed that the core 25 provides a firm support for the wire 26 and consequently the core with the wire thereon can be readily passed over or through the users hair to singe the ends thereof in an exceedingly effective manner. It will further be noticed that by coiling the wire 26 spirally around the core 25 an exceedingly large contact surface is provided to insure singeing of all the hair ends while drawing or push ing the device over or through the hair. By making the frame in two sections the several parts can be readily assembled or disassembled for repairs or other purposes.

In order to protect the cord 15 at its entrance into the handle 11 there is provided a spiral spring 30 attached to the rear end of the handle 11 and projecting a distance therefrom with the cord 15 passing through the'opening in the coil. It is understood that the outer end of the coil 30 readily yields or flexes on manipulating the tool to prevent cutting of the cord 15.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. An electric hair singer, comprising a frame having ahandle, a core of insulating material mounted on the said frame, a filament wound around the said core and contasting with the same, and means e1ectrically connecting the ends of the said fila= ment with a source of electrical energy.

2. An. electric hair singer, comprising'a frame provided with a fork and a handle, a core attached at its ends to the outer ends of the members of the fork and extending across the fork, a filament wound spirally around the core, and means electrically connecting the ends of the filament with a 10 source of electrical energy.
