GLOTHESLINE FASTENER.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN A. VVETH, a citizen of the United States, and resident of citreator, in the county of La Salle and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothesline Fasteners, of which the following is a specifica tion.

My invention relates to clothes line fasteners and has for its purpose to provide an improved construction of fastener of this type which will permit the line to be strung in a large number of directions radiating from the fastener; which will permit the securance of a line end with ease and facility, and which is of exceedingly simple construction, enabling the elements of the fastener to be produced and assembled at small cost.

With the above and other purposes in view my invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly set forth in the appended claim.

In describing my invention in detail. reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a stretched clothes line anchored at one end through the medium of my improved fastener;

Figure 2, a side elevation of my improved fastener on an enlarged scale and showing in dotted lines a fragment of a clothes line associated therewith; and

Figure 3, a top plan of my improved fastener as viewed in Figure 2.

Referring to the drawing my improved clothes line fastener is shown as comprising a base plate 10 adapted to be secured to a fixed support such as is shown at A in Figure 1 through the medium of screws or other suitable securing elements. Projecting centrally from the outer face of the plate 10 is anear 11 which is received in a recess 12 of a member 13, said member being swiveled to the ear by a suitable bolt or pin 14 and adapted to swing substantially through 180. The free end of the member 13 has a chamfered and serrated portion forming a clamping surface 15. At one side of the surface 15 the member '13 is specification of Letters Patent.

provided with an extension 16 disposed in a plane at right angles to said surface and to the plane of pivotal movement of the member. Pivoted against the face of this extension which is adjacent the surface 15 is a clamping dog 17 one end of which cooperates with the surface 15 to clamp the clothes line as clearly shown in the drawing. The other end of the dog 17 is forked to form arms 18 between which a pulley 19 is journaled and over this the clothes line is trained as shown in dotted lines in Figure 2, so that as the tension on the line is increased in stretching, the dog 17 is acted upon to proportionately intensify the clamping action exerted on the line between the dog and surface 15. By providing the member 13 with extensive pivotal movement it will be obvious that my fastener permits stringing of a line in a large number of directions without in any way affecting its effective operation. Furthermore, the construction of my fastener is such that the securance of the line is rendered certain at all times and under all conditions, while the parts are exceedingly simple in formation and easily assembled with resulting economy in manufacture.

I claim A clothes line fastener comprising av base plate adapted to be attached to a fixed support, an ear projecting from said plate, a member pivoted to said ear for swinging movement, an extension on said member, a dog pivoted to said extension, a serrated clamping surface on said member, said serrated clamping surface being straight and disposed at an angle with respect to the axis of pivotal movement of said member, one surface of said dog being straight and facing in the direction of said straight angu- 'larly disposed clamping surface of said member and at predetermined times during pivotal movement. of said dog being adapted to extend in spaced parallel relation to said angularly disposed serrated clamping surface whereby that portion of a clothes line arranged between the dog and said latter mentioned surface may be clamped with even force throughout its length. l I
