raeaeoe.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, THoMAs GREGORY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and tate of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hairpins, of which the following is a-specitication.
rlhis invention relates to hair pins, and it comprises a pin in which one arm is formed of two members pvotally connected to each other and normally spaced at the top beyond the pivot whereby the lower ends of the arms maybe opened when the pin is inserted to clamp the hair between them.
An object of the invention is the production of ahair pin that will not become displaced when in use. l
A further object is the provision of a pair ot arms that will clamp the hair between them.
A further object is the provision of means for spacing said arms to permit insertion and removal of the pin.
In the accompanying drawings, I have shown one embodiment ofthe invention. ln this showing:
Figure l is a front elevation,
Figure 2 is a side elevation,
Figure 3 is a perspective view, and,
Figure Il is a side elevation showing the clamping arms in spaced relation.
Referring to the drawings, the reference numeral l designates one arm of the hair pin constructed in the usual manner. Adjacent the upper end, vthe material forming the arm is split, forming two members 2 and 3. llhese members are looped in the usual manner, the loops being normally spaced from each other, as shown in Figures 2 and 3 ott the drawings.. Beyond the loop, the member 2 is provided with a curved portion Ll and the member 3 is coiled around the member 2, passing through the curved portion, as at 5. The construction provides a pair of arms 6 and v7, arranged parallel to and in contact with each other (see Figure These arms may be provided. with coils '8 and 9 respectively adjacent their lower ends and assist in holding the pin in the hair.
In using the pin, the parts are normally in the position shown in Figure 2 of the drawings, with the loops of the members 2 and 3 spacedfrom each other and the arms Specification of Letters Patent.

6 and 7 in contact with each other. `When thepin is to be inserted in the hair, the loops 2 and 3 are moved toward each other to the position shown in Figure l of the drawings, swinging` the arm 7 on its pivot and spacing it from the arm 6. The pin is then inserted in the hair and the loops released, the resiliency of the wire or other ma- 'terial returning the arm 'i' to its normal position adjacent the arm 6 and clamping the hair between the arms to securely hold the pin in position.
It is to be understood that the form of the invention herewith 'shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement ot parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subj oined claims.
Having thus described my invention, l claim:
l. A hairpin formed of a piece of wire` substantially lJ-shaped, said wire being split adjacent the upper end of one arm forming a pair of members, said members being eX- tended to form loops spaced from each other, and being then extended to form an arm substantially parallel to said irst mentioned arm, said members being coiled about each other adjacent said spaced loops to pivotally connect them to each other, the portion or said members beyond said pivot being `paral-l lel to and normally contacting with each other. I
2. A hair pin :termed of a piece o1"v wire substantially U-shaped, said wire being split adjacent the upper end oi one arm 'forming a pair. of members, said members being extended to form loops spaced from each other in the plane oi' said arms, said members being then extended to :torni an arm substantially parallel to said {irst portion and being pivotally connected to each other adjacent said spaced loops, the portion oi" said members beyond said pivot being parallel to and normally contacting with each other.
ln testimony whereof l aiiix my signature in presence oftwo witnesses.
