Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 25, 1922.
Application filed October 7, 1921. Serial No. 506,082.
T 0 all to 7mm it may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMIN H. FREED- MAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Paper Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device intended to secure together a number of sheets of pa per and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will be extremely simple in construction; which can be readily placed in position to securely retain together a number of sheets; which will in no manner mar or deface the sheets to which it is attached, and which may be readily removed when desired.
"With these objects, and other objects which may hereinafter appear, in view, I have derived the particular arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank from which my improved paper fastener is made;
Figure 2 is a plan view of a paper fastener in its folded position to receive the sheets which it is adapted to secure together;
Figure 3 is a plan view of my improved paper fastener applied to a number of sheets of paper, before the fastener is folded to secure the sheets together;
Figure 4 is a view of the paper fastener in its final position, holding together a number of sheets;
Figure 5 is a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Figure 2, looking in the direction of the arrows;
Figure 6 is an elevation of my improved paper fastener, looking at the side opposite to that disclosed in Figure 4; and
Figure 7 is a sectional view on the line 77 of Figure 6, looking in the direction of the arrows.
The similar reference characters appearing throughout the various views of the drawing indicate similar parts.
In the preferred embodiment of my in vention as disclosed in the accompanying drawing, 1 indicates the blank from which my improved paper fastener is made. It will be seen that this blank 1 is rounded at one end as at 2, to provide a face plate 3 o the device. The blank is folded upon the diagonal lines at, l, to provide a pair of wings 5, 5, which overlie the corners of the sheets of paper to be secured together as will be hereinafter set forth.
Each of the wings 5 has its tip or corners 6 inturned or doubled over on the line 7, whereby portions of the wings are of double thickness, thus providing rigidity to these wings and aiding-the papers to be placed readily in the fastener.
To place the device in position it will be seen that the sheets of paper ,8, to be fastened together, simply have their corners slid under the wings 5. This is done very readily, whereby the papers 8 and the fastener are in the position disclosed in Figure 3. To finally complete the operation of securing the papers firmly together, the fastener, together with the papers held therein, is folded on the line 9, which causes the device to assume the position disclosed in Figures a, 6 and 7 with the paper firmly held together.
It will be seen that on one of the sides the paper fastener presents the smooth face 3 which may be stamped or embossed with the name or trade mark of the concern using the fasteners, or bear other subject matter. The opposite face 10 of the fastener also presents a smooth, unbroken surface which cannot mar or deface the papers secured together. The fastener is preferably made of a thin, flexible sheet metal of su'liicient rigidity to retain the positions to which its various parts are folded and retain the papers firmly and securely together.
From the foregoing it is obvious that my invention is not to be restricted to the exact embodiment shown, but is broad enough to cover all structures coming within the scope of the annexed claims.
What I claim is 1. A paper fastener comprising a thin sheet metal plate, having its opposite corners inwardly bent at an angle to form wings which overlie the sheets of paper to be fastened together, said wings having their ends bent back to form portions on said wings of double thickness. 1
2. A paper fastener comprising a sheet of thin metal doubled upon itself to form a fiat face-plate, and a pair of wings opposed to said face and overlying the corners of the sheets to be fastened together, togetherwith the ends of said Wings being doubled on themselves to form portions of double thickness.
3. A paper fastener comprising a sheet metal plate having a pair of wings inwardly bent to overlie sheets of paper to be secured together, said wings having points doubled over to form portions on said Wings of double thickness.
Signed at the city, county and State of New York, this 10th day of August, 1921.
