SECURING llFLEANS FQR PRINTING PLATES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 18; 1922.
Application filed January 26, 1921. Serial No. 40350.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, CiranLns it. lvinisnn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Dorchester. county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Securing Means for Printing Plates, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to means for securing printing plates on holders therefor such as the plate cylinders of rotary printing presses. ple, secure and compact fastening means for such plates which, while not limited in its use, is particularly adaptable to small plates.
My invention will be readily understood by reference to the following description taken in connection with the accompanying; drawings of an illustrative embodiment thereof wherein:
Fig. 1 is an elevation of a plate cylinder having several plates secured thereon by a device illustrative of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary transverse section therethrough on an enlarged scale;
Fig. 8 is a fragmentary plan view on a still larger scale; and
Fig. a is an enlarged l-l of Fig. 3.
To illustrate the adaptability of my in vention I have shown in Fig. l a plate cylinder whereon a plurality of plates are placed side by side axially of the cylinder and also a plurality of plates circumferentially, although as will be apparent my in vention is not limited to such an arrangement.
Referring to the drawings 1 have shown a plate cylinder 5 to which are secured printing plates 7, they being received in the example shown between projecting ribs 9 on the cylinder. To secure the plates I provide a suitable binder or clamp overlying the plate and secured at its ends to the holder. Cenveniently this takes the form of a. more or less flexible member 11 conveniently of wire and the plate 7 may be provided with a groove 1.3 to receive this wire so that will lie inwardly of the printing surface of the plate. As best shown in Fig. l binders section on the line My invention provides a sim 11 are conveniently provided adjacent each margin of the plate.
When the plate is received between ribs 9 on the cylinder 5 these ribs 9 are provided with grooves 15 aligning with the groove 13 on the plate and also receiving the binder 11. The binder thus not only serves to hold down the plate to the face of the cylinder but also positions it firmly against lateral movement.
Provision is made for tensioning the binder over the plate and a convenient arrangement permitting ready removal and application of the binder is shown by way of example in the drawings. Therein I have shown one end of the binder 11, the left hand end viewing Fig. 1, as provided with an enlargement 17 adapted to engage the walls of the groove 15 in the left hand rib 9 on the outside thereof so that the binder is interlocked therewith against pull to the right. Suitable means are provided for tensioning the binder at the opposite end outwardly of the opposed rib 9 so as to draw it firmly down into the bottom of the groove 13 securely to fasten the plate to the cylinder. Herein, as shown more in detail in Figs. 3 and 4c, the end of the binder is provided with a plug 19 received in a radial cavity 21 in the cylinder. This cavity is conveniently of greater depth than the length of the plug so that the plug may be pressed down into the cavity to tension the binder and for this purpose a screw 23 may be provided adjacent the cavity having a head overlying the plug. By setting up the screw the plug is secured in the cavity and tension applied to the binder. By removing the screw the plug may be withdrawn and the whole binder conveniently lifted from the grooves. the engagement of the enlargement 17 with the rib permitting this action to take place easily. To fasten the plates the enlargement 1'? is engaged behind the rib and the binder laid over the face of the plate 7 in the groove 13. The plug 19 will fit readily into the cavity 21 and is quickly and strongly secured by the screw 23.
Having thus described in detail the particular embodiment of my invention shown by way of illustration in the accompanying drawings the principles exemplified thereby which I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent I shall express in the fol lowing claims.
Claims:
1. In combination with a plate holder a binder adapted to overlie a plate thereon, means to secure one end of the binder to the holder, a plug on the other end of the binder, said holder having a cavity of relatively great depth to receive the plug and means to depress the plug into the cavity.
2. In combination with a plate holder a binder adapted to overlie a plate thereon, means to secure one end of the binder to the holder, a plug on the other end of the binder, said holder having a cavity of relatively great depth to receive the plug and means to depress the plug into the cavity comprising a screw having a head overlying the plug.
3. In combination, a printing cylinder and plate having aligning grooves and plate 35 positioning means extending through said grooves and holding the plate against lateral displacement.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
CHARLES A. MEISEL.
