HUMIDOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July i8, i922.
Application led November 5, 1920.. Serial No. 421,853.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, FREDERIC OAKFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented Humidors, of which the following is a specification.
One object of this invention is to provide a relatively simple, inexpensive device particularly designed for use with or attachment toa metallic cigar box whereby a limited amount of moisture may be supplied to the contents of such box and in which the construction and arrangement of parts is such as to permit ofthe convenient removal and replenishment of the member from which the moisture is supplied. f
These objects and other advantageous ends l attain as hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which, y
Fig. l is a perspective view of a cigar box showing my invention as applied thereto;
Figs. 2 and are respectively an end and a rear side elevation of the box shown in Fig. l;
Fig. 4 is an elevation of the inner side of the removable moisture supplying member; and
F ig. 5 is a transverse section on an enlarged scale, taken on the line 5-5, Fig, 4.
In the above drawings 'l Vand 4 represent respectively the front and rear sides of a cigar box having ends 2 and 3, a bottom 5 and a cover 6 and while I have illustrated this box as made of sheet metal and while my invention is particularly applicable to a ymetal box, it will be understood that it may two sets from the upper and lower portions of said side 4, in addition to which a similar tongue l() is pressed out at one end of said side to limit the movement of said member 8.V
This latter is held in its guideway by friction or by any suitable device and in the present instance consists of a body of sheet metal folded in two parallel sections oit' which one is imperiorate and the other has a number of relatively large openings or perforations il, although obviously the size, arrangement and number of. these is immaterial. Confined between the two thicknesses of the sheet metal constituting the main portion of the member 8 is a sheet 12 of a porous material such as blotting paper which will absorb and retain water. The member 8 in the present instance is not only Hat and relatively thin, even after the introduction of the blotting paper, but is parallel sided and of such width as to slidably tit the guideway provided by the tongues 9.
ln utilizing this device, the blotting paper of the member S is saturated with water, after which said member is slid into place in the guides 9, with its perforated tace immediately adjacent the perforated rear side 4 of the box. In this position it is obvious that moisture is supplied through the perforations or openings l1 of the holder and through the perforations 7 of the box to the cigars or cigarettes whichmay be contained within the latter and if desired or found advisable, the front side of said box may be provided with openings 14 to faciliate the passage ot the water vapor from the blotting paper into and through the cigars, cigarettes, etc., within the box.
By this means said cigars, etc., are prevented from drying out or moldingy and when necessary the member 8 maybe removed and the blotting paper supplied with additional water. This device is particularly adapted tor application to filled cigar boxes constituting original packages, although by no means limited to such use, and it is to beV particularly noted that its manufacture and application to metal or other cigar boxes may be accomplished with but little increase in the cost thereof.
While I have shown my invention as applied to a box of rectangular section, ob-
viously the forni of said box is immaterial.
I cla-iin: t
The combination of zt container having a 5 perforated Erice and struck up tongues constituting a gnideway on said fece; a, relatively thin holder slidably mounted in the gudeway provided by said tongues and consisting of two spaced thicknesses of sheet metal; with a sheet of Water absorbent mal0 terizil mounted Within the holder, the oriter face ot' the latter being iinperforate and the face adjacent the perforated side of the con tainer lin-ving openings therein.
FREDERIC OAKFORD.
