To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MALVERN WV. SEVER- ANOE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuff Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cuff buttons and particularly to cuff buttons of the extensible yp i The object of the present invention is to provide an improved automatically adjustable cuff button which can be inserted in the button holes of a cuff quickly and conveniently; which will automatically lengthen or let out upon the raising of the sleeve along any desired position; which will hold the side portions of the cuff in fixed position and prevent accidental displacement thereof; which is simple in construction, and which can be manufactured at low cost.
Further objects of the invention are in part obvious and in part will appear more in detail hereinafter.
In the drawings, which represent one suitable embodiment of the invention, Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view. of my improved cuff button; Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof; and Fig. 3 is an end view.
Referring to the drawings, the cuff button shown comprises two like button members 1 connected by a spiral spring 2, said spring being preferably so constructed that when it is not under tension its convolutions will lie in close or even in abutting relation. 3 represents suitable means, such as a flexible wire, for limiting the extension I of the spring. The ends of the spring 2 and the wire 3 are suitably secured, such as by the solder 12, in the button members 1.
The button members 1 are of like construction, so that a description of one will suflice for both. Each member comprises a face plate t and a hollow shank 5 provided with an inner flange 6 and an outer flange 7, said inner flange 6 being provided with a cylindrical extension 8, forming a sleeve or cup which surrounds and entirely or partially encloses said spring, as desired.
The face plates t are attached to the outer flanges 7 in any suitable manner, such as by soldering, crimpingor the like. In the construction here shown the periphery of the flange 7 is provided with an annular bead portions of the cuff, indicated at A, Fig. 1..
Sidewise movement of the side portions of the cuff along the shanks is prevented and it is impossible for the coils of the spring to contract or close on the edges around the buttonholes of the cuff and damage them, or for the face plates 4 to be projected or extend too far beyond the face portions of the cuff with an unsightly appearance.
The face plates may be of any preferred shape or design, and in the construction here shown are relatively thin discs of an ornamental character, having the outer faces thereof monogrammed, as indicated in Fig. 3. It will be readily understood that these face plates may be made of gold, silver or the like, while the other portions of the cuff button, which are usually hidden by the cuff, may be made of cheaper material,
thereby lessening the cost of manufacture yet at the same time securing an attractive cuff button.
In the preferred embodiment of my invention, I prefer to provide means for limiting the amount of extension of the spring. The means here shown is the relatively fine flexible wire 3 secured in the hollow shanks 5 such as by solder or the like and lying within the coiled spring. The length of the wire 3 depends, of course, upon the amount of the extension desired, but in any event will be greater than the length of the spring when said spring is contracted or 111 neutral position. It will thus be seen that all of the advantages of an extensible cuff button are secured but without the danger of exceeding the elastic limit of the spring, thereby materially prolonging the life of the cuff button.
Having described my invention, I claim:,
