Be it known that we, i i 'nrorrr Pnnsrwiorr and Enrrns'r PnnsrwIoH. citizens of the rlnited States, and residents of Lawrence. county of Essex, State of Massachusetts. have invented an Improvement in Removable Handle Mechanisms for Brushes or Brooms, of which the following description in connection with the accompanying drawing. is a specification. like characters on the drawing representing like parts. This invention relates to improvements in removable handle mechanisms for brushes or brooms and the object thereof is to provide a handle mechanism which can be effectively attached to brushes of the usual. commercial form and which canbe readily removed when the brush is worn out and applied to another brush.

A further object of the invention is to provide av handle mechanism for brushes which can be applied to a brush of any'width and effectively clamped thereupon.

A further object'o'f the {invention is to provide ahandle mechanism for brushes in which an ordinary broom handle may be utilized.

Further objects and features of the invention will more fully appear from the following description and the accompanying drawings, and will be pointed out in theannexed claims.

The drawings illustrate our invention as applied to brushes such as floor brushes, but it will be understood that it may be used in connection with any type of brush, whether the brush is of stiff or soft fibres. or whether the brush has a fiat or a curved back.

A broom stick 19 or other handle may be secured in the loop 18 by screws 20, or any other suitable fasteners.

By reason of the construction above described the position of the frame 3 upon the top of the brush may be varied or adjusted in such a manner that pressure ap plied to the handle will operate the brush properly. The adjustability of the grip ping members enables them to be used with brushes of different widths, so that the handle mechanism maybe applied to a brush of any size, or any usual form. While the gripping members will usually retain the brush between them without assistance,

the vertical portion may be secured to the brush by screws as illustrated in Fig. 2, these screws being removed, of course, when it is desired. to detach the brush holding mechanism from one brush for the purpose of applying it to another.

The portion of the holder may be clamped to the frame by a screw 30 extending through the inclined aperture in the brush whi'elris usually pro vided to receive an ordinary handle; an anchor plate 31 being secured. over said aperture and desirably provided with a prong 32 entering the wood of the head to prevent displacement of the plateB'l. A winged nut 33 applied tlldllCFQW serves to clamp the holderlirmly against the frame By reason of this simple construction the handle mechanism may be readily attached to. and detached fronn the heads of brushes of the usual type; so that the handle may be, employed for different brushes.

This invention permits the removal of a worn brush from the handle and the replacement of anotl'ier brush. or if brushes of:

different-size. and different texture are to be employed in, different kinds of work the same handle may be applied to each of the various brushes.thereby avoiding the necessity of keeping a large number of handles on hand. and reducing the costof a set of brushes when the same are sold in sets. with a single handle instead of a handle for each brush.

It will be understood that the embodiments of theinvention disclosed herein is of an illustrative character and is not restrictive and that various modifications in construction and arrangement of parts may be made within the spirit and scope of the following claims.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

l. Removable handle mechanism for brushes connarising a frame having a bacl; adapted to lit upon the head of the brush and provided with upwardly. extending parallel flanges gripping means to engage an edge of a brush. a handle holder having a member fitting between said flanges and provided with means to receive a handle and means for clamping said frame and handle holder to said brush head.

2. Removable handle mechanism for brushes comprising a frame having a. back adapted to fit upon the head of the brush and provided with upwardly extending par allel flanges; gripping means to engage an edge of a brush, a handle holder having a member ,litting between said ilanges and providec with means to receive a handle and means for clamping sail frame, handle holder and brush head together.

8. Removable handle mechanism for brushes. comprising a frame havinga back adapted to fit upon the head of the brush and provided with upwardly extending parallel flanges, gripping n'iembers adjustably positioned between said flanges a handle holder having a member fitting between said flanges. and means operating to clamp said gripping members and said handle holder to saidgtrame.
