HHHHHHHHH LE Fi C 5,. 1951 atented Aug. 9, 1932 .UNITED STATES GEORGE A. Bosma, or cHIoAeo, ILLINOIS BRUSH HANDLE Application led December 5, 1931. Serial No. 579,310.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in cleaning devices and particularly to means for attaching handles to scrubbing brushes, and the like.
One object of the present invention is to provide a device of this character which is of simple construction, whereby it may be easily secured to and removedfrom an ordinary scrubbing brush, regardless of size.
Another obj ect is to provide a device of this character which readily permits the handle to be adjusted to different angles with respect to the brush and the floor.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device, applied to a scrubbing brush.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the device removed from the brush.
Referring particularly to they accompanying'drawing, there is shown a scrubbing brush the bristles 11, in connection with which the present invention is especially adapted for use.
The device comprises, broadly, a clamp 12, for gripping the head of the brush, and a stem 13, for engagement with a handle. The clamp 12 is adjusted angularly, with respect to the stem, so that the brush may be present to the ioor at various angles, thereby greatly facilitating the operation of the brush.
As clearly shown in the drawing, the clamp 12 comprises a pair of fiat metal plates 14, each of which is bent to extend horizontally outward, as at 15, thence vertically downward, as at 16, and thence inwardly, as at 17. The above-mentioned'portions 14, 15, and 16 areV arranged to embrace the side'edge of the brush head 10, the portions 14 and 16 bearing on the upper and lower faces of said head, respectively, while the portion 15 lies against the outer vertical edge face of the head.
The stem comprises two elongated plates 18, placed flatly in contact with each other, and provided with the alining openings 19, said plates having their upper ends insertincluding the back or hand portion 10 and.
PATENT OFFICE ed within a kerf 20, formed in the lower end of the handle stick 21. Bolts or rivets 22 are passed through openings in the handle, and through the said openings 19, of the stem, for the purpose of securing the stem to the handle.
The lower endsof the plates 18, of the stem 13, are placed between the upper ends of the plates 14, of the clamp 12, and a bolt 23 passed through openings 24, formed in the plates 14. The said lower ends of the plates 18 are bent outwardly and downwardly, as shown at 25, whereby to exert outward frictional pressure against, and to space the upper portions of the plates 14 apart, as will be clearly seen in 65 the drawing. Oneend of the 'bolt 23 carries a nut 26, which, when loosened, permits the plates 14, together with the brush, to be swung, whereby to dispose the brush at the desired angle, with respect to the handle. Also, when said nut is loosened, the plates 14 may be moved away from each other, by their inherent resiliency, whereby to permit theremoval of the worn brush, and the' insertion of a new one.
What is claimed is: Y
A handle attachment for a brush comprising a clamp including a pair of plates having angularly bent portions conforming with and embracing the sides of a brush back and upwardly extending portions, astem comprising a pair of flexible plates secured together at one end, said secured ends being adapted to be secured to a handle stick, the other ends of said plates being spaced apart and disposed between the upwardly extending ortions of the clamp plates, and a clamping olt disposed through said upwardly extending plate portions and the spaced ends of said steml for holding. said portions and ends in frictional engagement and the clamp engaged with the brush back, and for permitting angular adjustment of the clamp with respect to the stem.
In testimony whereof, I aiix my signature.
' GEORGE A. BOSLER.
