JOSEPH WARE, OF WEST SWANZEY, NEVt HAMPSHIRE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.142,305, dated August 26, 1873; application filed June 2, 1873.
- ings, of which Figure 1 is a vertical section, and Fig. 2 a horizontal section, of a Window provided with my invention. Fig. 3 is a side view, Fig. 4 a top view, and Fig. 5 an edge view, of one of the sashsupporters.
Each sash, A or B, is grooved vertically on 'one or each of its outer edges, as seen at a, to
receive one of the supporters 0, which consists of a strip of vulcanized India rubber, b, and two strips, 0 c, of wood or other inelastic or stiff material, rabbeted, fastened together, and arranged as represented-that is to say, the elastic strip bis wider than each of the rabbeted flanking-strips cand they are placed on opposite sides of the strip b, and disposed so that it may at its outer edge project a short distance beyond them, and also at its inner edge a longer distance beyond them, all as shown, the part f so projecting, when the supporter is in the sash, serving as a spring to force the outer edge of the rubber stripin contact with the next adjacent edge or part g of the window-frame D.
From the above it will be seen that the clastic strip of rubber not only serves as a spring to press the supporter against the sash and window-frame, but as a friction-brake to arrest the sash or hold it up at an elevation within the range of its movement in the window-frame.
Theflanking-strips of the supporter not only operate to sustain the elastic strip of rubber, but to enable the supporter to slide freely horizontally in the sash-groove, the said flanking, strips being fastened together and to the elastic strip by rivets or other suitable means.
I am aware that it is not new to apply to a sash a friction-bar, and one or more springs to force such bar against the window-frame. Therefore, I make no claim thereto. I am also aware that it is not new to use India rubber within a sash for supporting it in its frame, and, therefore, make no claim to such in the abstract. In my supporter each of the flanking-strips is rabbet-ed lengthwise, inorder to form between them a chamber or space for the elastic strip to expand in. These rabbeted strips, therefore, become important features of my invention. a
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The sash-supporter 0, consisting of the clastic strip b and the two rabbeted flankingstrips 0 a, forming a single piece, the elastic substance projecting on either side, loosely fitting in lengthwise of the sash, all substantially as described and shown, for the purpose set forth.
JOSEPH WARE.
