WINDOW FRAME SASHES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 23, 1918.
Application filed April 8, 1918. Serial No. 227,192.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY E. CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful lmprovemer'it in Window Frames and Sashes, of which the following is a specification.
The invention is a window-frame and sash, wherein all the structural parts are of wood except the laterally extending metal sash plates and the metal plates secured to and in the jamb openings, between which last-named plates the gaps receiving the sash extension plates are formed.
In the accompanying drawings I Figure 1 is a horizontal section through the sashes and one of the hollow jambs. Fig. 2 is a similar section of said sashes and a portion of the hollow jamb, illustrating a modified form of the metal plates which constitute part of the inner wall of the jamb.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A and B are sliding sashes, provided with any suitable counterbalancing means, not shown. The sash frames are of wood, and the glass panes C are seated in said frames and secured by strips D in any suitable way. The two jambs respectively on opposite sides of the sashes are alike, so that a descri tion of one jamb applies to both. Said jam s are hollow. One of the jambs is shown at E, and comprises the following parts: a rear wall F of wood, an outer side wall G of wood, a front wall H of wood, and an inner side wall, which consists of a wooden member I secured to front wall H, a woodenmember J secured to rear wall 1*,and two narrow flat metal plates K and L respectively secured upon the inner faces of members I and J. Extending into the jamb and here secured to the rear wall F is a bar M of wood, upon the face of which is secured a wooden partition N. Said partition carries a meta plate 0 which in Fig. 1 registers with the plates K and L. Between the opposite edges of plate 0 and the adjacent edges of plates K and L are gaps or slots which extend from top to'bottom of the j amb. Upon the sashes A, B are fastened laterally extending metal plates P, Q which pass through the gaps or slots aforesaid, and at their free edges are preferably in sliding contact with ametal wearingplate R on the face of bar M. In this way, I produce joints between the sashes and the jambs which are impervious to drafts of air and to moisture, and which obviate any need for the usual weather-strips.
Instead of making the plates K, L flat and securing them upon the inner edges of members I, J, and instead of arranging the plates 0, K, L to register with the inner face of member I, as shown in Fig. 1, I may lengthen the partition N and bend the plates K, L at right angles, as shown in Fig. 2, and.
1 may also omit the member J, the plate L then being directly attached to rear wall F. In this case the sashes are respectively in sliding contact with the middle plate 0 and with one of the side plates K or L, and, therefore, are not in contact with the wooden portions of the jamb.
I claim:
1. A window-frame and sash construction, comprising a hollow jamb of wood having in its inner wall a vertical opening extending from top to bottom of the jamb,
vertical metal plates secured to said wall and extending into said opening on opposite sides thereof, a middle metal plate interposed between said plates, there being gaps between the opposing edges of said first-named plates and the edges of said middle plate, a fixed support for said middle plate, two sashes in sliding contact with said 'jamb wall, and on each sash a laterally exspeetii'el attached to the edge of the inner respectively in slidihgl e0ntact with said iamblwe; lbounding said opening and to the middle plate and onelof the adjacent plates. 2H1" 'frdiitfifaee efthe rear wall of said jamh, In testimony whereof ifhave afixed my 4. A windowirame and sashconstrucsignature inpresence of two witnesses. 5 tion, asset forth in claim 3, the inner faces HARRY CAMPBELL;
of said plates registering; and disposed in a. Witnesses: a A plane lying Within the. sash opening be- GERTRUDE TKL'PGRTERQ tween the jambs, and the said sashes being MAY T. McGAimt'.
