The main object of this invention is to provide simple, durable, economical. and thoroughly eflicient means adapted to be carried and manipulated in the hand of an operator, whereby an ordinary crown cap is seated on the top of a bottle, and securelyk attached and sealed to the head of the bottle, and for unsealing and removing the cap from the said bottle.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the novel tool as to include a die member carried by a handle iXedly secured thereto, said die member being provided with means for holding the crown cap on the top of a bottle until the outer upper end portion of the die is struck a sharp blow with a mallet or hammer which will force the die downwardly thereby causing the flaring corrugatediflange formed on thesaid cap to be drawn or compressed around the head formed at the upper end of the bottle, whereby the cap is securely locked and sealedto the top of the bottle.
Another object of the invention is toprovide means carried within the die member whereby the tool will be caused to readily release itself from the cap, thus preventing the breaking of the bottle neck.
A further object of the invention is to provide means carried by the tool handle,
which may be adjusted and arranged so that its lower forward end will rest beneath the corrugated cap, while the handle serves as a lever for the purpose of releasing or unsealing the cap from the bott-le.
The foregoing and such other objects as may appear from the ensuing description are attained by the novel features of construction, arrangement, location and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto, it being understood that slight changes inthe precise form, proportions, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without depart-ing from the `spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings forming` a part of this specification, it will bey seen that:

Similar numerals of reference are yemi ployed to designate like 'parts throughout the' several views of the drawings.
In the embodiment of my invention as illustrated7 and which shows a preferred construction, the numeral l indicates the crown of the cap, 2 the skirt and 3 the annular flaring corrugated flange formed integral with the crown cap.
The numeral 4: designates the die member of my improved tool, saiddie being preferably formed of sheet steel, or other suitable sheet metal possessing the desired strength, and provided with an inner annular wall which is tapered or beveled from its bottom edge upwardly and inwardly at 5, said wall then extending vertically upward and terminating with a horizontal inner solid top wall 6, thereby forming a chamber within said die member for the reception of a hollow annular slidable capping member T, formed preferably of sheet metal of the required strength, the outer wall of said member 7 being adapted to slidingly engage with the inner wall of the die member, the lower end portion 8 of the member 7 being adapted to contact with the upper surface of the crown cap, while the upper flat surface 9 of the member 7 contacts with the lower surface of a metallic plate washer 10, said washer serving the dual purpose of protecting the soft rubber gasket ll," arranged in contact with the upper face of Vsaid washer and the inner top surface of the die member, and to strengthen the walls of said die member when subjected to a blow with a hammer or mallet for forcing the crown cap on the bottle head. i
The body pOrtiOn 0f the die member is formed with an elongated slot 12 therethrough for the reception of the inner terminal end portion 13 of a resilient handle member le, said end portion passingl through an opening formed in the annular upright wall of the member 7, and said slot 12 permitting limited reciprocating movement of the said. member 7.
The handle member 141 is formed of a single piece of solid wire possessing suiiicient strength for the purposes required, one end portion 1'6 of its arm 1"?. being preferably reduced and lixedly confined and secured within the beaded lower end. portion 17 of the die member, while its upper resilient arm 18 is provided. with the reduced end portion 13 which passes through the elongated slot 12 and the opening formed in the member 7.
ln Fig. 1 the device is illustrated as it appears on the top of a bottle before the sealing opera-tion is performed, and showing the crown cap held on the top of the bottle with the lower surface of the member resting thereon and the lower inner beveled portion of the die member in contact with the skirt of the cap, thus when a sharp blow is imparted by a suitable mallet or hammer to the upper outer surface of the die member with sufficient force, said die member is forced downwardly and carried to assume the position shown in Fig. 2 thereby forcing the member 7 to slide upwardly causing the soft rubber gasket to be compressed between the washer plate and the top of the die member, and at the same time forcing` the lower portion of the die member. which is in contact with the skirt portion of the cap, downwardly thus forcingthe flaring corrugated portion of the cap inwardly around the bottom or lower portion of the annular bead formed around the outer top portion of the bottle neel; 19, thereby capping and tightly sealing the mouth or top of said bottle.
Carried by and connected to the arms of the handle member is a slidable metallic catch 20. the lower frontportion of which is preferably provided with an integral eX- tended tongue 21 adapted to rest beneath the corrugated extensions formed around the lower edge of the skirt of the crown cap when said slide 2O is adj usted to the position shown in Fig. 3, so that when it is desired to unseal or remove the crown cap it will be simply necessary to lift upwardly on the handle member, which serves as a lever, thereby lifting the crown cap from its sealed position as will be readily apparent.
lt will be seen that my novel means may be easily and readily manipulated in the hand of an operator for both sealing and unsealing a crown cap, without requiring the use of expensive machinery, and that the several parts constituting the novel device may be made of any suitable or desirable material adequately adapted to perform the desired and required functions.y
it will be perceived that when the die member is forced to the position vshown in `Fig. 2, the soft rubber gasket will be compressed, hence the reaction thereof will have a tendency to readily release said die member from contact with the cap and avoid the breaking of the bottle neck or top portion thereof.
Having thus described my invention what l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A portable hand tool of the character described, comprising a chambered die member provided with abeaded lower end, a slidable member within the die member, a washer plate within said first named member, resilient means adapted to contact with the upper surface of said washer plate, and a handle member with one end fixedly secured to the beaded portion of the die member andv its other end passing through an opening formed in the body of the said slidable member.
2. A portable hand tool of the character l described, comprising a die member having an inner tapered and vertical wall, a slidable member adapted to contact with said vertical walls, and a resilient handle member with one end tixedly secured to the lower end of the die member and its other end projecting through an elongated slot formed in the wall of the die member and passing through an opening formed in the body of the said slidable member.

A portable hand tool of the character described, comprising a die member provided with a beaded portion at its lower end and an elongated slot formed through its body` a hollow slidable member adapted to engage the inner wall of said die member and having an openingthrough its body portion, a washer plate fitted within said die member, resilient means adapted to contact with the upper surface of said washer plate and the inner surface of the top of the die member, and a handle with one end fiXedly secured within said beaded port-ion and its other end passing through said opening formed in the body portion of the slidable member.

A portable hand tool ofthe character described, comprising a die member formed with a beaded portion at its lower end, a slidable member fitted within said die meinin the body of said slidable member, and means overlapping the handle and sldably Connected thereto adapted to be adjusted 10 beneath a crown eap whereby the said cap is removed by the upward movement of said handle.
