This invention relates to a container or bottle opener, or more particularly to a bottle cap remover, for one-hand operation in the removal of crown caps from bottles and similar containers.

It is an object of this invention to provide a one-hand operable fulcrum type of opener for the removal of crown seals or caps from bottles or the like and at the same time tending to obviate squirting of the contents.

It is also an object of this invention to provide an improved type of bottle cap opener or remover including a cap provided with a squirt obviating apron or bafiie formed with a cap flange engaging lip.

It is an important object of this invention to provide a bottle cap remover including a squirt obviating cap including an edge contacting lip and having a downwardly deflected handle to make the device susceptible to one-hand operation.

Other and further important objects of this invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the specification and the accompanying drawing.

The invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawing and hereinafter more fully described.

Figure 1 illustrates an elevational View of a bottle having an improved bottle opener or cap remover, embodying the principles of this invention, engaged thereon;

Figure 2 is a slightly enlarged elevational view of the upper portion of the bottle showing the bottle opener in section with the gripping lip or tongue engaged under the rim of the bottle cap;

Figure 3 is a similar view showing the bottle opener handle swung downwardly against the bottle with the cap elevated and showing the opener apron or bafile shield in position to obviate squirting of the bottle contents; and

Figure 4 is a bottom plan view of the bottle opener.

As shown on the drawing:

The reference numeral l indicates a bottle, the mouth of which is closed by means of a crown cap or cover 2 of the ordinary type.

The bottle opener or bottle cap-remover embodying the principles of this invention comprises a cap or hood constructed of metal or other suitable material and consisting of a substantially flat top 3, the inner surface of which is provided with a cap recess or depression 4. Integrally formed on the cap top 3 is a deflecting apron or baffle shield 5 which is deepest at the front and tapers upwardly and rearwardly toward the rear of the cap to integrally merge with a shaped handle or lever B, which when the opener is engaged on the upper end of the bottle neck project downwardly and outwardly away from the neck of the bottle, as clearly illustrated in Figures 1 and 2.

For the purpose of engaging or gripping the crimped rim or flange of the bottle cap 2, a lip or tongue 1 of arc shape is struck inwardly from the wide front portion of the opener cap deflecting apron or bafile shield 5 at a distance substantially halfway between the lower edge of the apron 5 and the top 3 of the opener cap.

When it is desired to remove a crown cover or cap 2 from a bottle I, the bottle opener is engaged with the opener cap seated on the bottle cap 2 with the bottle cap projecting into the recess 4 and with the removing lip or tongue I projecting beneath the crimped edge of the bottle cap 2, as clearly illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawing. The bottle opener is capable of onehand operation, and with the opener engaged as shown in Figure 2 it is only necessary to push downwardly on the handle to move the handle toward the neck of the bottle with a fulcrum-like motion on one edge of the bottle cap thereby causing the lip or tongue I to swing one side of the bottle cap upwardly away from the mouth of the bottle. With the removal of the bottle cap 2 from the upper end of the bottle, as illustrated in Figure 3, it will be noted that the opener cap apron or shield 5 has the wide middle portion thereof so positioned that squirting oi the contents of the bottle is obviated or substantially curbed.

It will, of course, be understood that various details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and it is therefore not the purpose to limit the patent claims hereon otherwise than necessitated by-the scope of the appended claims.

I claim as my invention:

1. A bottle cap opener comprising a cap top, a flared and tapered deflecting apron integrally formed thereon, a gripper lip on the interior of the apron for engagement beneath the flange of a bottle cap, and a shaped and deflected handle integral with the top and the ends of the tapered apron thereof and positioned to project downwardly and outwardly from one side of a bottle neck on which the opener is engaged to facilitate one-hand operation of the bottle opener to cause removal of the bottle cap when the bottle opener handle is swung downwardly toward the bottle.

2. A bottle cap remover or opener comprising a top member for seating on a bottle cap, a tapered squirt deflecting apron integrally formed on the top member and projecting downwardly around the bottle cap and the upper end of the bottle neck, a lip member struck inwardly from the deepest portion of the apron and engaging beneath a, portion of the bottle cap, and a deflected handle integral with the top member and the apron and normally projecting downwardly and outwardly from one side of the bottle neck to permit one-hand operation of the bottle opener by swinging the handle toward the bottle neck and raising one side of the cap member to cause the lip member to remove the bottle cap and position the apron around the open mouth of the bottle to deflect squirting of the contents thereof.
