and useful Improvements in Folding Feed.
Boxes, of which the following is aspecification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to feed boxes, and
"particularly'to a portablefeed box.
Anobject of the invention is to provide a device of this character wherein the sides and ends of the box are foldable to, render the box compact and portable.
it is also an object of the invention to provide a feed box of this character wherein one ofthe side members is provided with a flexible or resilient bail which not only provides means for carrying the box from place to place, but which is also capable of being used to support the feed box by engagement with a suitable object.
It is still a further object of the invention to provide a device of this character wherein the means used tohold the various parts in their folded position is also used to hold said parts in their extended position in engagement with each other.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the improved construe tion and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more particularly described, fully claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a folding feed box constructed in accordance with an embodiment of the invention, and showing the box in its folded position,
Figure 2 is an end elevation showing one of the end members extended, and the sides and opposite end members of the box in their folded positions.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the device in its extended position, showing the means for securing the box to a support.
Referring to the drawings, 5 designates a base or bottom which may be made in various sizes, said bottom having a pair of transversely extending spaced cleats 6, which depend from the lower surface of said base or bottom, an eye 7 being carried by the ends of the cleats, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described. Secured to the upper surface of the base or bottom, at the end of the bottom, and extending transersely thereof,is a pair of cleats 8. Hinged as at 9 to each of the cleats 8 is an end member 10, each end member having an extension 11 which projects from the innerface of said end member and adjacent the ends of the member. Each ofthe extensions 11 is provided with fastening means such as hooks 12 which at times are adapted to engage the eye 7. It will be noted that the ends of each of the side members extend beyond the side portion of the base or bottom, so as to permit the extensions 11 to be disposed parallel to the side edges of the bottom.
lrlinged to the longitudinal or side edges ofthe upper surface of thebottom 5 are side members 13, said side members being adapted to swing inwardly of the bottom and to engage said bottom in their folded position. It will be noted that the cleats 8 correspond in height to the thickness of the sides, so that when the sides are folded they are disposed flush with the upper surface oft-he cleatsto permit the end portions to bereadily folded upon the side members. In addition to providing supports for thehooks 12, the extensions 11 are also used to properly position the side members with respect to the end members byengaging the outer faces of the side members, the outer faces of the side members adjacent their endportions being provided with eyes 14 adapted to receive the hooks 19,. It will. be noted that the outer edge of each extension is cut away so as to prevent interference with the hooks 12 when engaging the eyes 14;. The end members 10 are also provided with recesses adapted to receive the eyes 1 1 when. the sides and ends are in their folded positions. lVhen the side members 13 are disposed in their folded position, that is engaged with the bottom member or base 5, they are locked by means of a latch 15, the keeper 16 of the latch being carried by the outer face of one side member, while the latch proper is carried by the outer face of the opposite side member.
The end members are adapted to be swung inwardly upon the side members and are guided in this movement by means of the extensions 11 which are disposed closely adjacent the longitudinal edges of the base. This movement brings the hooks 12 substantially in alignment with the eyes 7 so that faces of the extensions 11.
post.
, ,It is of course obvious that itis not al ways convenient to support a feed box. lVith applicants device, this disadvantage is overcome by-the provision of. novel holdingmeans having a double function. This neanscomprises a coil spring 17 which may be made relatively long, said spring having eyeslS and 19 provided at its ends. eye 1530f the spring isadapted to engage an eye member 20 carried by theouter face of one of the side members, while the eye 19 is adapted to detach-ably engage a hook member 21 carried by the same side member in spaced relation to the eyeQO, and inwardly of the path oftmovement of the end members when said side and end members are being folded. After the device has been extended for use, the base 5 may be placed upon the hub of a wheel or like projection and the spring 17 extended around one of the spokes or an adjacent object, The eye 19 is then engaged with the hook to properly clamp the feedbox and prevent the same from be ing accidentally disengaged. It may be likewise supported upon a post, as theresiliency of the spring will prevent the box from becomingaccidentally disengaged from the p After the sides and ends have been folded, and the spring disengaged from the The supporting object, the eye 19 may be engaged with the hook member 21 to provide a bail or handle by means of which the feed box may be conveyed from place to place.
From the foregoing it will be readily seen that this invention provides a novel folding feed box which may not only be rendered compact in order to permit the box to be conveniently handled but which is provided with novel means for efficiently supporting the box when in use.
hat is claimed is 7 1. A device of j the character described comprising a receptacle, a yieldable bail connected at one endto one of the foldable members of the receptacle, and adapted to extend around a suitable support, and means carried by said member of the receptacle for the reception of the opposite end of the bail to hold said bail in binding engagement with thesupport.
2. A device of the character described comprising a base member, cleats carried by the lower surface of said base member, eyes projecting from the ends of the cleats, cleats carried by the upper surface of the base member, end members hinged to said cleats and projecting beyond the lends of said cleats and sides of the base member, extensions carried by. the inner surface of said end members, side members hinged to said bottom member and arranged for movement inwardly ofthe extensions and intoengagement with the extensions, eyes carried by said side members adjacent the extensions, and fastening means carried by saidextensions for alternate engagement with theeyes of the side members and eyes of the cleats.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature. v
