Description

J. D. EATON RACK Filed Nov. 5, 1923 Patented Dec. 16, 1924.
UNITED STATES JAMES D. EATON, 0F MEDFORD, OREGON.
RACK. i
Application filed November 5, 1923.1 Serial No. 672,869.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES l). EATON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Medford, in the county of Jackson and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Rack, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to racks or trays, and more particularly to a rack or tray especially designed for fruit packers use, the primary object of the invention being to provide means for supporting and holding the paper employed for wrapping peaches, apples, pears or the like prior to the packing thereof.
An object of the invention a device of this character that may be readily and easily positioned over one edge of a fruit box to facilitate the wrapping of the fruit by having the papers or sheets in easy access to the packer.
A further object of the invention is to provide a clamp that will, by frictional engagement with the fruit box, securely hold the rack in position.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein described and claimed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed is to provide without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a plan view disclosing a fruit box and a rack or tray supported thereon.
Figure 2 is an enlarged plan view of the tray or rack Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the tray or rack.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates a box employed for shipping fruit or the like, and to which the device forming the subj ect matter of the present invention is removably secured.
The tray is formed more particularly of sheet metal and includes bottom 6, side walls 7 and an end wall 8, the end wall being provided with a socket member 9 in which the upper end of the supporting leg 10 is positioned, which supporting leg assists the clamping members, to be hereinafter more fully described, in supporting the tray.
To reinforce the walls of the tray the upper ends thereof are turned outwardly and supplied with a reinforcing wire 11. The side walls 7 are shown as having their upper edges inclined as at 12 so that the apers or sheets used in packing the fruit will be easily accessible from either the front or sides of the tray.
As shown, the bottom 6 of the tray is formed with an extension 13 that extends downwardly clearly shown by Figure 3 of the drawing, where it is engaged by the bracket members 14 that are secured to the undersurface of the bottom to hold the downwardly extended portion 13 of the bottom 6 in a position at right angles with respect to the bottom 6.
Cooperating with the extension 13 are the clamping members 15 that are secured to the tray by means of the rivets 16 the clamping members 15 being of the spring metal type to closely engage the edge of the box over which. the clamping members are positioned. These clamping members extend through openings 17 in the extension 13, the openings being relatively large to allow for slight movement of the clamping members and permit the clamping members to adjust themselves for use on boxes wherein the side Walls thereof are of various thicknesses.
In the use of the tray, or rack, the tray is positioned over one edge of a fruit box in a manner as shown by Figure 1 of the drawing, whereupon the sheets of paper or wrappers usually employed for wrapping fruit for shipment, are placed therein whereby the operator may have easy access to the papers while wrapping the fruit.
I claim In a device of the character described, a tray including a. bottom, one end of the bottom being bent downwardly, said downwardly bent portion being provided with a pair of relatively large openings, clamping members extending through the openings In testimony that I claim the foregoing as I and secured to the bottom member, said my own, I have hereto affixed my signature clamping members adapted to move ver- 111 the presence of two Witnesses.
tically in the openings to adjust themselves JAMES D. EATON. 5 for attachment to supports of various thiek- WVit-nesses:
