MAP HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 4., 1922.
Application filed April 23, 1921. Serial No. 463,759.
To all whom it may com/cam:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hollywood, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Map Holders, of which the following is a specification.
It is an object of this invention to provide a holder for maps and the like which forms a convenient case adapted to be closed and readily carried, and also arranged to be conveniently swung open so as to display any desired map carried by the same.
The invention will be readily understood from the following description of the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the closed map holder, and
Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the holder in open position.
The holder is made of flexible material such as leather, inorder to form a suitable case, which, when closed, forms a convenient pocketbook or the like for transportation. The case consists of cover leaves 1 connected by the back 2 to which the intermediate leaves 3 are hinged. One of the cover leaves is provided with a side extension forming a flap 4 so that when the opposite cover leaf is folded upon the intermediate leaves the flap 4: may be folded over the closed leaves and thereby form a closed casing. The flap extension and the opposite cover leaf may be provided with cooperating means adapted to form a detachable connecting means, such as shown at 5.
The intermediate leaves 3 each consist of side walls 6 suitably secured together at their top and bottom edges so as to form a pocket between the same, and said side walls are disconnected at the free edge of the leaf to provide a slot 7 through which a map or the like may be inserted in the pocket formed by the leaf. The side walls are provided with window openings 8 which extend throughout the larger part of the area of the leaves, and as a .result the side walls form in effect simply frames surrounding the window openings, so that either side of the maps received in the pockets of the leaves may be readily observed thoru h the windows. A map mounted in a poc et of an intermediate leaf. is shown at 10 and transparent protecting sheets of celluloid or the like, and as shown at 11, preferably overlie the surfaces of the map and are inserted with the same into the pocket. The cover leaves, preferably, also form pockets upon their inner sides, and for this purpose a fabric 13 is secured to the inner surface of each cover leaf, with said fabric disconnected from the cover leaf at the inner edge of the latter and so as to form a slot 14, through which extra maps or the like, such as shown at 15, may be inserted into the pocket thus formed.
A second fabric 16 is preferably secured to fabric 13 with the inner edges of said fabrics disconnected in order to form a slot 17 for the insertion of a'map into the pocket formed by said fabrics. The fabric 16 is provided with a window opening 18, such as previously described, in order to display the map contained within the pocket, and said map is preferably provided with a transparent protecting cover sheet such as previously described.
It will be understood that the device may be made up with any number of intermediate leaves in order that any number of maps may be carried for display, and the maps inserted in the pockets are preferably folded sheets so that a map is displayed through thewindow opening at each side of each of the intermediate leaves. The device thus provides a handy receptacle for maps or the like which will be found of particular utility for tourists, since the case may be either folded so as to form a convenient protecting case for the maps, or may be readily opened so as to display any one of the maps carried thereby.
In practice the various maps showing a complete tour will be displayed through the windows of the various leaves of the case, while additional maps for other tours may be carried in the pockets provided upon the inside of the cover leaves, and when a tour has been complete the mapsmay be rearranged so that the necessary maps for a subsequent tour will be conveniently placed for use in the leaves of the case and so as to be readily seen through the windows of the leaves.
Various changes may be niade without departing from the spirit of my invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
A holder comprising a pair of cover leaves and a plurality of intermediate leaves, each of said intermediate leaves including side sheets being provided with a pair of pockets walls forming a pocket between the same adapted to receive maps and one of said adapted to receive a map or the like, said latter pockets having a window opening that 10 wells having window openings therein for is covered by a transparent sheet. displaying said maps transparent sheets In testimony whereof I have signed my covering said maps and received with the name to this specification.
same in said pockets and one of the" cover WILLIAM W. WRIGHT.
