Be it known that I, CLYDE S. NoNNn- MAGHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wenonah, in the county of Gloucesterandr State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Strap Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to improvements in st yap fastener devices and has for its object to render the same more simple in operation, to'reduce the cost of production of such devices and to secure a more certain binding effect upon the article to be held. To these and other ends the invention consists in the novel features of construction and combinations-of elements hereinafter described.
The prescribed form of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of the strap fastener device shown as encircling several books which are intended to be held together.
Figure 2 is an enlarged front view of that portion of the device comprising the metal member and thestrap projection.
Figure 3 is a sectional plan view on line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 represents a modification of the slotted metal member shown in Figures l, 2 and 3'fin which metal of a circular cross section is employed.
Figure 5 is a modification ofthe slotted met-al member shown in Figures l, 2 and 3 in which the member is formed of one continuous piece of metal.
In the device illustrated in Figure l, the object to be held is represented by several books lv and encircling these books is the strap 2, composed for the purposes of my description of canvas webbing of sufiicient thickness and width to withstand the weight of the objects when suspended from the strap. The respective ends of the straps 3 and a1 are formed in a manner to be presently described and the folding of the material at the ends represents one of the novel features of my invention. in order to more clearly unnerstand the manner of folding the material, reference should be made to Figure 2, in which a portion of the strap 2 is illustrated as folded once upon itself as shown at 5. A second fold of the material is then made in Specification of Letters ljatent.

There then remains a portion of the strap comprising the end 3 and in order to secure this end it is formed as shown, by tucking or placing it between the first mentioned fold and then stitching the three thicknesses or plies of the material as shown at 7 and 8. Any other suitable means of securing or fastening together the plies may be employed as a substitute for the stitching provided the relation between the strap and metal member is not changed. This novel means of folding the end portion of the strap causes a later l proj ecticn 9 to be formed, the use of which will be more fully described.
lVhen the strap fastener device is being formed, the ends 3 and t are so folded that when the respective ends are stitched at 8, the lateral projections 9 and 9 will be facing towards each other and will also be on the same surface of the strap.
T he slotted metal member l0 is preferably mane as shown in Figure 3 and is of sufficient thickness to withstand the strain to which it may be subjected.
This slotted member may be made of flattened material or of rounded material as shown in the modification l1 in Figure Ai. Figure also shows a modification of this metal member formed of one continuous piece. in forming the member as shown in Figure 3, the slot is formed by bending the metal until the slot is of a sufficient width to allow not more than twice the thickness of the strap to pass therethrough. This width is represented by the cross-hatched portion i5 which shows twice the thickness of the strap 2, The length of the slot is made sufficiently large so that the full width of strap 2 may pass through easily. The ends 13 and lat of the metal member are bent back upon themselves substantially as shown.
In adapting the device to encircle an article, a looped portion of the strap is passed through the slot in the metal member as shown in Figure l, and secured to the article. Either one of the ends of the strap7 in this case end 4, is pulled to tighten the device, and as the strap tightens about the articlej the lateral projection 9 is caused to engage the metal member i0 and bind against the adjacent face of the opposite end of the strap, thereby causing the strap 2 to encircle the article tightly and give a more certain bind` ing effect.
Changes in size, shape and the materials of the parts' may be made without departing from the scope of the invention.

In a strap fastener device, the combina* tion of a metal member having a slot therethrough, a strap having a looped portion extending through said slotV and adapted to encircle an article to be held, said slot being of a with adapted to receive not more than twice the thickness of said strap, one of the ends of said strap having a lateral projection formed of a thickened portion of the strap material and on the face thereof next adjacent the opposite end portion, said projection extending toward and having the tip end thereof frictionally engaging the adjacent opposite face of said opposite end portion, and being adapted to be drawn toward said slot and between the two strap ends projecting therethrough.
2. In a strap fastener device, the combination of a retaining member having a slot therethrough, two strap portions extending through said slot, one end of said two strap portions being adapted to engage an article to be held, one of the opposite ends of said two strap portions having a lateral projection formed of the material of the strap and on that face thereof next adjacent the other of said two strap portions, which latter of said strap portions extends to be pulled to tighten the device, said lateral projection eX- tending toward and having the tip end thereof frictionally engaging the adjacent opposite face and being adapted to be drawn toward said slot and between thetwo strap portions extending through said slot.
3. In a strap fastener device of the character described, a strap having the end thereof folded twice back upon itself for a portion of its length and stitched immediately adjacent the fold, said folded portion formed by the stitching comprising a three ply portion projecting laterally and being adapted to engage the surface of the opposite end and the extreme free end being straightened substantially into line with the main portion of the strap, and a slotted retaining member embracing said strap and engaging said folded portion.

In a strap fastener device of'the'character described, a strap having the end thereof folded twice back upon itself for a portion of its length and fastened together immediately adjacent the fold, said folded portion formed by the fastening comprising athree ply portion projecting laterally and being adapted to engage the surface of the opposite end and the extreme free end being straightened.` substantially into line with the main portion of the strap, and a slotted retaining member embracing said strap and engaging said folded portion..

In a strap fastener device of the character described, a strap having each of its ends folded back for a portion of their length and stitched immediately adjacent the folds, said folded portions formed by the stitching projecting laterally toward each other, and a slotted retaining member embracing said straps and engaging one of said folded portions.
7. In a strap fastener device the combina* tion of a strap having the end thereof folded back upon itself for a portion of its length and stitched immediately adjacent the fold, said folded portion formed by the stitching projecting laterally and being adapted to frictionally engage the adjacent face of the opposite end of the strap, and theextreme free end being straightened substantially into line with the main portion of the strap, and a rigid, slotted retaining member passing around the width of the strap, said slot being of a width adapted to receive not more than twice the thickness of said strap.
