AVA/5K INV EN TOR AITORNEY WILLIAM C..STEFFAN,'FRA1\ K 'B. ACKERMANN, AND WALTER 'J. GBEINER, 0F
- CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CLIP.
To all who/1t it may concern:
Be it known thatwe, WILLIAM G. STEFFAN, FRANK B. ACKERMANN, and WALTER J. Gunman, citizens of'the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of'Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clips, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to clips such as are used for'preventing the loss of penstand pencils, and an object of the invention is to provide clips of this nature designed'to please the aesthetic senses as well as the clips which may be utilized for purposes of identification or exhibiting insignias of various organizations. I
A. further object of this invention is to provide a clip comprising a spring arm which is attached to the pen or pencil in the usual manner and the attaching portion of which is adapted to engage .in a ribbetedged recess in a clip head to permit the attachment of the spring arm to a head bearing any suitable indicia which may be embossed thereon, engraved therein, or which may be enameled on the head, the detachability of the head lending the clip advantageously to the enameling of the in signia in that the head may be removed for baking the enamel thereon.
With these and other objects in view the invention will be better understood from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein Fig. l is a fragmentary side elevation of a pencil showing the improved clip attached thereto.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the clip.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional View through the clip showing it attached to a fragment of a pencil and is taken on line of Fig. 1.
Fig. el is a cross section through the clip taken on line l& of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section through a modified form of the clip.
Fig. 6 is a greatly enlarged fragmentary section through still another modified form of the clip.
Referring to the drawings more particularly, the improved clip comprises a spring or resilient arm 1 which terminates in a sphere 2 at one end, the said sphere being Specification ofLetters Patent. Patgnted June 27 1922 Application filed October 9, 1920.
Serial No. 415,728.
provided to permit frictional gripping engagement against-the support of the pen or -P6I1Cll such as the fabric of the users pocket.
file upper attaching end 3 of the spring arm 1 is perforated as indicated at at to permit its attachment to'a pen or pencil. as indicated at 5in Figs. 1 and?) of thedrawings, and as shown at 6=thespring arml is bent outwardly .to normally space the major portion thereof from thepenorpencil to which the clip is attached.
.TheIupper attachingend 3*of-the spring .arm 1 has its longitudinal edges beveled,
which beveled edges are adapted-to engage the beveled edges 7 of the recess 8 formed in the head 9 of the clip. As clearly shown in Figs. 8 and 4 of the drawings the thickness of the attaching end 3 and the depth of therecess 8 are equal whereby the outer surface -of the attaching portion will lie flush with the back of'thehead 9- The head 9 may be made in any artistic shape or design and has embossed upon, engraved therein, or enameled upon its outer surface sired color effects .of'the insignia on head 9 may be enameled thereon or the initials of the owner may-be enameled, and in such cases it is necessary to remove the head 9 from the spring arm 1 for baking the enamel. in that subjecting the spring arm 1 to the heat necessary to properly fix :the enamel would take the temper or tension out of the spring arm rendering it ineffective. The head 9 and spring arm 1 may be connected by any suitable type of cement if it is so desired. or friction may be relied upon to maintain their connection.
In Fig. 5 of the drawings a modified form of the invention is shown in which the clip is formed of a single piece of metal and cut and stamped to the desired shapes. the.in dicia 12 being stamped on the cap 9 at the time of forming the head 9. By forming the clip of a single piece of metal and stamping the indicia thereon, a simple efficient clip is provided, which is artistic in appear ance and which may be manufactured for a comparatively small cost, the knob or sphere 2 being formed upon the lower end of the spring arm 1' by bending or rolling the terminal of the spring arm upon itself, as clearly shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings.
A still further modified form of the clip is illustrated in Fig. 6 of the drawings, and in this form the attaching portion 3 of the spring arm 1 is perforated at 4 to permit it to be riveted to the pen or pencil to which it is to be attached and the head 9 is provided with a beveled edge recess 8 similar to the recess 8 in the head 9, which recess receives the attaching portion 3 of the spring arm 1. The recess 8 is gradually increased in depth at its outer end as shown at 14, and after the head 9? and spring arm 1 are connected the upper end of the attaching portion 3" of the spring arm 1 is bent laterally to lie in this deepened portion 14:
forming a lock for locking the head 9 upon the attaching portion 3'- It is, of course, to be understood that the invention may be constructed in various other manners and the parts associated in different relations, and, therefore, we do not desire to be limited in any manner except as set forth in the claims hereunto appended.
-Having thus described our invention what we claim is: r
1. A clip for pens or pencils including a spring arm, an attaching portion on said arm, ahead provided with a recess in its back surface to receive said attaching portion, 'said recesses being equal in depth to the thickness of said attaching portion whereby the outer surface of the attaching portion will lie flush with the back of said head. e
2. A clip for pens or pencils comprising a spring arm, an attaching portion on said arm, ahead having artistic indicia thereon,
saidhead provided with longitudinally extending recess in its back surface receiving said attaching portion for connecting the head and spring arm, the recess in said head gradually increasing in depth at the upper end of the head, said attaching portion adapted to be bent into the upper depth in 'tures.
creased end of said recess to lock the head and spring arm connected.
2:3. In a clip for pens or pencils, an attaching portion having beveled edges, a head having artistic indicia thereon, said head provided with a recess in its back surface,
the edges of said recess being beveled to snugly fit the beveled edges of said attaching portion for connecting the head and attaching portion.
4. A clip for pens or pencils comprising a spring arm, an attaching portion on said arm having beveled edges, a head having artistic indiciathereon, said'head provided with longitudinally extending recess in its back surface, the edges of said recess being beveled to snugly fit the beveled edgesof said attaching portion for connecting the head and spring arm, the recess in said head gradually increasing in depth at the upper end of the head, said attaching portion adapted to be bent into the upper depth increased end of said recess to lock the head and spring arm.
5. In a device as set forth an attaching portion, an indicia carrying head shaped to conform to the configuration of a pen or pencil and provided with a recess to receive said attaching portion, said recess being substantially equal in depth to the thickness of said attaching portion.
6. In a device as set forth an attaching portion, an indicia carrying head shaped to conform to the configuration of a pen or pencil and having sliding engagement with said attaching portion.
7. In a device as set forth an attaching portion, an indicia carrying head shaped to conform to the configuration of a pen or pencil and provided with'a recess to sli-dably receive said attaching portion.
In testimony whereof we afiix our signawire. STEFFAN.-
FRANK 1e. ACKERMANN. WALTER J. GREINER.
