STIRRUP.
Application filed May 10, 1919 Serial No. 296,062. 4Renewed November 26, 1921, Serial No. 518,073.
T 0 @ZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I,"V\ILLIAM T. PRATER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomfield, in the county of Stoddard and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in` Stirrups, of which the following is a specification.4
The primary object of the invention is to provide a safety stirrup of that type having a tread plate so connected with the stirrup frame as to enable the horseback rider to obtain a quick release of his foot from the stirrup in case of the animal becoming unmanageable or in case of an accident.
Another object of the invention resides in providing a stirrup of the above stated character wherein the latch end of the tread bar, upon the active position of said tread bar, is concealed, thus preventing the riders foot from accidentally releasing the same from engagement with the latch.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a stirrup of the above stated charac-ter wherein the tread bar of the stirrup is so constructed as to permit of detachably mounting thereon a foot warming device.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a stirrup of this character, which is simple in construction, serviceable, positive and reliable in its operation and inexpensve to manufacture.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts which will hereinafter be morel fully set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claims.
Figure l is a perspective view of a stirrup constructed in accordance with the invention ready for use; A
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the foot tread released;
Figure 3 is a view similar' to Figure 1, showing the casing in section, illustrating the latch mechanism;
Figure 4 is a detail view illustrating` the connection of the actuator with the latch bar;
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the tread plate clearly illustrating the manner of attaching thereto improved foot warming device; and
Figure 6 is a transverse section taken through Figure 5.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing, in which like characters of reference refer to correspondingparts in the several views, 5 denotes a metallic frame of substantially U-form presenting parallel limbs 6 and 7 connected to one another through the medium of a curved connecting v portion carrying' a loop 8 for receiving the usual stirrup strap, not shown, adapted to connect the stirrup to a saddle. The limb 6 of the frame is of hollow tubular formation, providing a casing 9 which is formed in the upper portion thereof with a vertically disposed slot 10, the purpose of which will be fullyset forth as the description of the invention is proceeded with.
11 denotes a tread plate with which the riders foot is engaged when in mounting position, and is provided on its under face withy a centrally located reinforcing rib 12, having one end extended beyond the terminal 13 of the treadv plate to provide a loop 14. This loop 14 of the reinforcing rib embraces the lower end of the limb 7 for mounting the tread plate thereon for horizontal swinging movement. The free or opposite end of thetread plate is provided on the innermost longitudinal edge thereof and at apoint flush with the outer end 15, with an angularly extending foot 16, bent upon the plate and provided with a rearwardly and downwardly extending inclined extension 17, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully set forth as the description of the invention is proceeded with. The trunnions 18 and 19 of the operating plate V20 vare journaled in the openings 21 of the Vformed on the lower terminal of the tubular casing 10 is a substantially U-shaped socket 23 disposed angularly of the casing and adapted when the tread plate is in locked position, to receive the foot portion 16 thereof, as better shown in Figures 3 and 4 of the drawing. This socket 23 further serves to conceal the foot 16 of the tread plate, and thus prevents the foot of the rider from accidentally displacing the same from the socket.
Disposed in the tubular casing 10 of the frame is a vertically movable latch holder 24 adapted when the tread plate is in locked position, to protrude through the aperture `i"latch" bolt 24E againstethe tension ofthe ln'spring, releasing` the tread=` pllate'll, 'when fthe rider` is"1 "desirousof releasing his foot *fi'omthe s'tlirrup,1-in tlieevent-ofwtlie unie f inalsvbecoming"nnmanageable or having` an Maccidfent. y
Detaehably mounted on the tread plate` i ill is afoot Warmingldevice' 29. This foot `Waringngf device'129 1 includes a receptacle 30 including-1T a"rear`wall 3L having end and intermediate notches and respectively, `thu`sllloW-ing the foot-Warmingdevice to "lretaim-in appli'edfposition, to clear fthe "'flang'elt `of the tread plate `and therein-` l""foioingfrib"iltthereof "I lhei resilient U- l `shaped ielipf fis" provided and is adapted 30 to overlie the treadplate lIl for holdingthe ""hea`ti`ng` receptac-le() tothe under portion tof saidH tread#` plate, and to this end,` :then "liinbs"offsaid-felip `are provided with flanges W36 which "engage under theange 34 ofthe 3 5` tread plate and hold Y the`` heating receptacle "to the *tread iplatef and? further retain 'the "z protector"37` uponfthe upper face Aof the" 1Atread plate. ` "lronii the foregoing description, taken in `connection With theaocoinpanying drawing-,1:
the advantages "of construction! and of the LVMmethod of operation Willbe readily apparent to L"those skilled inthe 'art'to which `the invention relates, and while I have described "the principles of operation of the invention,
together with the device which I non7 consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, land"L that such changes :may be made when desired as are within the scope 'of the claims appended thereto. V
